The CIE strongly supports the Chinese Language and Culture programs offered in Edmonton Public Schools and also provides such supports to the local communities and educational institutes. There are all kinds of courses in both Chinese language and culture in the CIE, including Chinese language汉语, Dough Art面塑, Paper Cutting剪纸, Tai Chi太极拳, Traditional Folk Knot中国结, Traditional Calligraphy书法, Traditional Painting国画, Traditional Chinese Instruments传统乐器 (Yang Qin扬琴, Er Hu二胡 and Guzheng古筝) and so on. So, if you and your friends need any help with these courses, you’re most welcome to join us at any time.

Edmonton Students Share the top prize at the International World Chinese Language and Culture Competition in China

At the recent International Chinese Language and Culture Competition named the 6th Chinese Bridge for High School Students, the 3 students from Edmonton Public Schools have been awarded the first prize in the group category. These 3 students are Shawna Truong and Drew Parker from McNally High School and Ivy Friesen from Ross Sheppard High School. This group of students led by Edmonton Public teacher, Dr. Xie Mian Mian (also the Cultural Coordinator of the Confucius Institute in Edmonton), went to China to attend this 2 week competition in Kunming City of Yunnan Province. They are grouped with another 3 students from Toronto to form the Canadian team. This team has worked extremely hard and achieved the top place in this competition. They were later awarded the first place in the final competition, and second as the most popular team in the world. This is a great achievement for local students and also underscores the effectiveness of Chinese language programming in Edmonton Public, a program that has won international renown.

The Confucius Institute in Edmonton is again honoured as “Confucius Institute of the Year 2013”

EDMONTON – December 9, 2013 – The Confucius Institute in Edmonton (CIE) has been recognized by China as Confucius Institute of the Year, the second time CIE has received this distinction in the past three years. The CIE, one of 430 Confucius Institutes worldwide, was honoured in a ceremony in Beijing this past weekend. The Confucius Institute in Edmonton was for its innovation and achievements in in promoting the learning of Chinese language and Chinese culture. The award was presented by Vice Premier of China, Madame Liu Yandong and received by CIE Director Dr. Wei Li and Assistant Superintendent Diana Bolan, representing the host organization, Edmonton Public Schools.

The CIE was recognized for its community support and extensive educational services to the public by offering courses in language and cultural topics. It continues to be the largest Chinese Language Credentialing Centre in North America, giving more than 1,200 assessments per year. In addition, it is also the largest provider of Professional Development for teachers in Chinese in Alberta.
“We’re extremely proud of the Confucius Institute in Edmonton” said Michael Donovan, Managing Director of ZGM Collaborative Marketing in Edmonton. “We created a new brand and advertising program for them over a year ago when they first became a client, and since then we’ve seen so many great things happen. We’re very happy for CIE. It’s well deserved.”
The CIE supports 14 Edmonton Public School Board classrooms that teach Chinese Bilingual programs, which support 3,000 students learning Chinese, 2000 of which are in the world famous Chinese Bilingual program. Support is also provided to schools and institutions throughout the province upon agreement with the CIE. Edmonton Public Schools serves as the foreign host with the Education Department of Shandong Province being the foreign partner. Also growing is direct support to Alberta’s business community.
