5 w+ O( c% B$ v0 b: @0 O
, y" P& O7 e: V6 |
1. I couldn't care less. 6 M# K2 P7 b' O: L* M1 j$ b
$ M% j" d5 x8 ? 这句话的意思是“我不在乎”,“缺乏兴趣”(lack of interest),也就是:I don''t care at all. 或 I don''t give a hoot. 例如: " D* P. D* P$ V4 n+ }; R* G* A
L" i& P# y: I% r, i 人家如果问: What do you think of the budget-cut?(你对预算削减有何看法?) & S, r; d x" ^, b: w5 B" t
% Q, Z6 h( j% f6 U4 C1 R
你回答: I couldn't care less.(我毫不在乎) ' h8 o* h. d' g! |
; J3 E: t6 r: w- e1 T0 d* d: T
How do you like Mr. Lee's political point of view?(你喜欢李先生的政见吗?) ! _; S3 [4 A8 h1 k( L* k: G9 N
- {, A. l6 i% M6 T8 s, ~ I couldn't care less.(我才不在乎呢!) 6 W0 X7 c0 v- H" W
2 g: r) {9 \2 X& B. j
# _7 n! |( M* x& l- z6 l0 Y* W8 O' H4 X6 V; n T# o T
I couldn't care less about the promotion or pay raise.(我不在乎升级或加薪)
+ @/ b% y- c3 q6 ^+ S# k3 ~/ f$ `! @6 o/ H4 G2 s8 e% p, t. r$ U
Yes, you do(care).
8 y2 I5 Q, K. R( h0 J% {4 R* G4 c8 r
至于 I couldn't care more. 就是“我很在乎”(I care a lot.)或 I care deeply. 同理:
9 j' o, p6 H6 n/ @' r! o5 t+ X
: \( `9 N1 l1 e& K; j I couldn't agree more.=I totally agree.(我完全同意) : _% k& ]) k8 r+ B4 ~4 Y
: i: C. `9 L2 _0 u
I couldn't please you more.=I did my best to please you.(我尽量使你高兴) ' j0 Q( l9 k6 i/ @% x
/ C: j/ N1 w1 D' M( [ h I couldn't be more right.=I am totally right. 1 U/ h# W6 p" P! D3 A1 `
' Z3 U' w4 Z( L8 J% ~, y
n: D2 x: C! T
I couldn't be more wrong. $ {4 {- _8 h6 c
5 F3 }, K$ b" k0 u5 e* \, Y
4 T2 M5 S! [2 g 不过,严格来说,I could care less. = I care to some degree.(care 的程度可能减少)
8 a; e. H9 `8 e1 l! I
( V# [: `8 b0 h, f# w: p1 ] I could care more.=I care some.(care的程度也许增加)(主词可用任何人称代名词:he, she, you, we, they 等。但只用 could,不用 can。) % }, T7 L+ ~; d- A
) X( m) N4 h3 L. e9 D 2. No bones about it.
$ b, k* m0 ] j& u! d% n% [! v0 c) I
意思是:真实的,诚恳的(truly, sincerely or exactly),也就是 to make no bones about it.(bone 要加 s, it 是指 something)例如: 8 Y8 R$ l. f5 B7 g8 O; Y
, J" {* T. n2 \; K( o2 V His wife is beautiful;no bones about it.(他的太太真是很漂亮)
c0 p" ?- H0 Q; ]( ~
" U: z8 S" Z$ B Mr. A made no bones about it when he talked about abortion issue.(当 A 先生谈到堕胎问题时,他是诚恳的。)
7 k: e: y2 y- g ^7 g( x
7 N, C. _" Z0 e5 m+ y When I spoke on the topic,he said, "No bones about it."(也就是他同意我的看法) 7 z. j+ w0 A# A7 Q
- E" k: h, V8 W
No bones about it;the weather is very chilly today.(今天是真的太冷了) * z, h5 |0 U: H3 X M0 ]
" d" z, g, _, \+ c. s# l 3. take it on me!
8 z1 P5 v, y; `7 i3 H+ `% s5 D1 x7 X
意思是:“这是我的,请用吧!”“这是免费的”(help yourself to it; it is free),这多半是指吃的东西或一些不贵重的东西。例如:
/ V- q" P/ f5 z( F; Y. u. ~
1 u: x) p9 ^- }+ q2 Y Here are some candies from England; take one on me. (one = candy) # c/ q# d$ p% V, {5 R$ J
P# \6 ~8 d8 _; d, E
The restaurant owner said to me, "Take the dessert on me."
8 Y+ {# q, o L, _
Please take these pencils on me.(取用一些我的铅笔吧!) 6 F7 D" T% B" n1 P4 w; l
! e- D0 K3 e% }" `; h4 v) u 可见 take 后面的 it,是指 something,而 on 的后面通常不指别人,所以多半也只用在第一人称单数 me。
) Q9 A0 i' `) _9 L( u% q. R5 [4 {' L0 }9 `
(假如夫妇在一起,也可以说:Take it on us.) - |1 s7 p8 ^2 F8 v) A- Y9 i
* G) l. N, v) _. V; E6 v% y
4. I am from Missouri.
2 p+ b3 ] ^- H* d6 a* c% o
' {' s0 W" G+ c7 y+ |' X/ y& R 这句话有时后面要加一句:“I need to be shown.”或“You have got to show me.”,意思是 Missouri 州的人很固执 (stubborn),不太信任别人,一定要人家证明一下(prove it to me),所以密苏里州也被称为“The Show Me State”。 8 A- ]! }% b: ^
" v7 c5 [. Y0 t1 ]* F! I
He is not easily convinced because he is from Missouri. 1 `6 Q1 }1 W+ [* U# E: ]
- R( ^2 M/ _3 F. u7 ~. o Don''t try to fool me; I am from Missouri.(You have got to show me.)
+ A: n0 A' Q* N6 Z2 z1 Q4 N7 D" ?" e9 l2 @7 A( R2 ^' W
We are all from Missouri; we need to be shown. . W! ]$ [- P% v( T% N; S+ n
( }( I3 d4 o' s As Mr. Smith is a tough guy; he must be from Missouri. (Smith |
