Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression
( A7 Z6 z: H( q G" S/ cof the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is
. C/ {9 I* B3 A9 n3 Xnow inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3
. _% _) W; a2 x) Z& imegapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution0 B+ `3 P& X# K, E% L3 ~& v
within a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color( W* g9 S) M9 f( u6 [/ ]4 g# W
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance( I" F. a! p! M2 @" G W( C
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800
! y/ x$ `' h* uallows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject( J" g% g. M: t) x4 V+ d
without having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography6 b+ r$ s0 z% y+ U; V0 \
was traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum
- W: W; U8 g1 [5 Y# L5 q, Rimage quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was3 t1 W/ ~4 Q0 f, ?
widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and
5 g1 \0 h: F0 u3 A6 uconvenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown7 w. a# j/ w6 V ?
before, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,

1 ]; t9 ~$ N- mWhen I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location,
2 i2 e) o4 b) Q( x! ]1 j36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic
4 }) E4 w* o z! i; _0 D: f! ~9 w( Z( Vrange, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces" k9 l @2 f7 R# G) H* }! ]# J8 Y M1 ^
the look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a8 Y3 N5 v/ d' _$ [- m5 q; v
D-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as
* n- c- t0 y5 t1 d1 uwell as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.. Z$ n6 G, }/ E# T4 S5 Y# R* X6 D0 \
Autofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor
/ v/ v9 } E Q. Z: a8 mhas noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is9 T3 b5 ^$ a8 g; {& {0 ]
easier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while
$ j0 ^1 g0 l X* C, W6 \also feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New
' G: x( p: e" f4 |% ~ j/ N/ b* }cameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features
# J7 o7 `. B+ R& oin such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality" Y3 Q* Y% J! i8 F& h! O
prints and video., `) ~/ ~$ M. Q; E( K
To me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is- S" }$ q; y9 w0 F- H/ Q6 h& R3 v
not megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models
& n" v5 ~# a* [% @" q% a8 U; Mare important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using2 j4 J6 l" c. \7 Q
countless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first# e7 X. H0 q8 h0 |) W
sight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws7 w4 [" o4 f( V- s7 P
like never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of1 G3 k1 h6 r$ O& }) |2 O' S
acuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I
8 r- w, j- \2 s& {5 e. F X0 J- @am enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as* r9 I! |) q& ?1 q' x
though they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse
: k4 O, U @) D' M4 R, @5 a0 fphotography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add
; U" H$ P+ H5 k. [1 i/ y* V2 Gtremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the
, {; }3 d8 ]' S7 E" xD800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express( e u o+ j, f
is that now I will think differently about the images I make.% } {" N0 {; h) P' Y
As a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,
9 r" k! ~5 G4 P8 ^+ `1 Ccompact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal5 T$ x4 Y9 ~+ g7 p6 Z, ^
artistic and client expectations. The Nikon D800 will set new standards for

architectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they
9 M* J# W" _; r' J9 k+ i4 x xperfectly match with the newly invented system and produce breathtakingly
/ |" d" H$ \6 ^3 fclean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility
0 p2 ]* s1 M' V- I" Gto work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional
5 f6 T ~+ g) Krange of light. It definitely takes my photographic versatility and image quality
