it all depand on what you want. a diamond ring can be broken down into the following 4 categories:
[: {( V; J, h. s9 s. f% x% ?, R; ?
size 9 H) S1 V3 K- z, b$ N# }1 f4 k$ E
colour
7 j! {6 G' i% y" {3 P3 U) ^& B# Mclarity6 Q* E& N. Q4 t) H2 _' W
cut

if you want a very high clarity and colour, then $10K CAD may only get you a 0.5 ct diamond if you don't care as much about colour and clarity, then you can easily get a 1.0 ct or bigger ring. typically, girls care more about the clarity and size. , p; A" F3 d9 o* @

the cutting of the diamond is also very important. a well cut 0.5 ct diamond may look as big or maybe even bigger on surface than a 1.0 ct diamond if it wasn't cut properly. 7 Z7 V$ L+ ~3 l/ Q, Z: f! L d6 F
+ b) M4 [3 @* ~( S; U3 |the solitary princess diamond is the most popular style for an engagement ring. solitaty means a single large diamond (not a whole bunch of small diamonds or dusts but with the total weight added to a 1.0 ct) and princess means it's cut into a round shape on top (not square or oval shape)

/ ?1 `+ N; f3 Ethe band (ring itself) can be found in white gold 14K or 18K. typically, the better the diamond, the better band it comes with. ie <$5000 ring usually comes with a 14K band but >$5000 ring will come with a 18K band. * u" c, F7 \+ R8 h
