Position Profile Heavy Duty Mechanics inspect, service, and maintain diesel locomotives in accordance with federal and company regulations.

They are also responsible for other important tasks, including:

Diagnosing diesel engine malfunctions and making indicated repairs
1 Q2 |" s$ U% Y% ~  U. o. UOperating machinery in a safe and effective manner
Providing daily locomotive maintenance that includes changing oil or repairing, replacing, cleaning and adjusting parts
- _9 L: F, ]) Y# a- tAssembling and starting engines
Diagnosing locomotive component malfunctions
Preparing inspection, work and maintenance reports

Good eye-hand coordination
Frequently lifting weights up to 50 pounds

! Z. z& X( e  d  bPhysical work, sometimes outdoors in extreme weather conditions
Regular exposure to dust, pollen, fumes, noise and vibrations
Working shifts, sometimes away from home

Using measuring devices and understanding visual displays

* K4 v7 @) x' \% L. n% P. r8 UVisual acuity and hearing threshold tests are required for this position. Written pre-employment tests to become a Machinist Apprentice are required for this position. Completion of 3-year apprenticeship is required to become a Journeyman Machinist. This position is subject to night, weekend and holiday work hours when needed.
