that we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet
) z* r {/ ?% Oservice providers.

Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are( k {! R3 ~3 u# D2 S4 p
an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving* C! T+ ~, Y0 C' r2 X
innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops$ s! Z, K# L- ^ @- k7 O
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look& A" O; r, }/ d: n9 J4 a
carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be
$ M, e( _7 t) R" Qguided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and' m5 M) V0 P/ E: U: ]4 V
investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing( L7 `: g" i6 _ l' z
market forces to prevail.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has1 ^0 H h' h7 s0 Y( Y7 U# [% M
chosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large
, j# u1 p5 l- p6 inumber of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the
2 d" @6 I2 W, \3 ogovernment will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in
& ]* D' p$ w+ Gline with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages
% Y, g4 ^4 P9 Gcompetition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that
# I; P0 d( s" W5 l# a% Many decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.$ [% d3 i/ V5 j1 p! D$ N
