on the issues that matter. Prime Minister Harper and I have been clear$ K: A3 r; o; `* f
that we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet
! r+ e$ N# l: Q/ f) ?, k( aservice providers.! d9 Z: T/ s; V+ ?* t# w
3 c4 S9 K/ Q& `. \Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are
5 U3 d& x" f! q# a/ Van increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving0 b, a6 B7 ?/ F" ?, g6 R
innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops+ h+ J. h& b: D: i1 N1 @+ ?- w
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look4 y" C& C; V/ Y( F* c' q2 R! M
carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be
1 E6 ^9 l% a& }5 D) c8 Aguided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and) B3 K1 p3 `! N/ _
investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing1 i, X: y1 h! B! N
market forces to prevail. : M' w: W) R# M5 n
' r2 N N0 N$ h& P/ {2 F4 w
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has2 y! r1 t+ p7 d" \0 q Q3 l, j
chosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large
: g8 Y/ P/ V3 Lnumber of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the
; w+ i: i; }1 g1 E' A& Lgovernment will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in# x2 d6 c* o/ u4 i$ z E& q$ L
line with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages
, L/ M# ]* d; Fcompetition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that
4 L* ~- j- C2 L" p5 Lany decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.8 m- K. k/ Z2 h& y7 [. i( p' D
