The Coordinator of the Multicultural Coalition* M4 [3 |+ U7 H( b$ g9 q6 c
Roles and Functions
" R4 Q7 l3 O, q1 ?The Coordinator is responsible for the over-all management and operations of the. C( |* C# U6 G. ^" V+ P
organization. The Coordinator defines the objectives, policies and goals for the
) C1 o; n5 f$ ?1 r/ P3 J0 w" K* _operations of the organization staff within the general board policies. He/she has* C; }+ K/ {( S* ^
the important responsibility of accurately reporting on financial progress,8 L- V9 u* f$ F$ H1 L Z6 m
operational concerns, organizational problems and accomplishments at regular( H3 h9 `) u: G, w
board meetings. Short-range planning is the responsibility of the Coordinator and is" t- b# m( E. a5 G8 ~
conducted within the policy guidelines of the board. The Coordinator is an
2 E$ ?- Z; p' Q2 b4 Nemployee of the board and therefore should not be part of the board which hires. o0 `9 M* F5 \1 h0 p
staff and sets their salaries. However, the Coordinator should be required to attend& ~+ ~3 c# }5 g t6 V' c
all board meetings and be an active, nonvoting participant.

The specific functions of the coordinator include the following:2 G& U) @+ z4 e8 M" ?+ {+ [9 c
1. Provides over-all coordination of Coalition activities in consultation with the, D& L2 ^' P8 ^9 V" {, y; }, V
officers of the Coalition
9 E& y5 h3 w# N; Q8 }: ~2. Builds and sustain relationships and partnerships with ethnocultural
8 l' ~0 M# C. I0 J3 ^" Gorganizations, immigrant and refugee communities, voluntary organizations% _/ `" D3 `2 \- j
and public institutions. O! V( G9 O) Y; M
3. Seeks opportunities to ensure sustainability of the organization through
6 K1 D7 r2 {( Q! Efunding opportunities and maintaining initiatives+ c% P" {; V1 N1 Y8 p
4. Liaise with funders, public and non-profit organizations and community$ O& L+ c8 J( ]+ j2 t+ s
organizations as well as the media and build strategic relationships with

5. Promotes transformative leadership among formal and informal community

participation of ethnocultural communities with the larger Canadian society

Administrative responsibilities:
C4 m7 X4 Z/ Z+ e. I! {( |( h {1. Maintain an adequate bookkeeping and accounting system; provide for its
6 v7 ~4 D' S* f/ g( gregular examination by competent outside auditors, selected by the board of2 I6 f$ L5 t' V
directors, and at the regular annual meeting, present a statement to the
, T: }) [; Y- E" M/ c0 Fmembers of the Coalition’s financial condition./ L, t& Z% ^1 Z1 l
2. Recruits and hires staff for programs and other initiatives of the
5 t4 ^4 a6 s/ o# ], S- hMulticultural Coalition+ w* [7 `4 ?$ c% S; ^) J0 G3 ~
Relationship of the Coordinator to the Board& N! u' q0 c( q7 g
All operating decisions, employing and supervising personnel, choosing ways to
, N) a, `6 Z3 `7 ]implement policies, planning the Coalition’s day-to-day activities, and coordinating
, ?2 E2 G" A3 v+ {. }3 q# h' k: Woperations are a part of the Coordinator’s responsibility.
5 N7 Y. R! X$ s; j7 lThe Coordinator shares some responsibilities jointly with the board, such as longrange planning. The Coordinator usually provides the initiative and then assists the board in decision-making. The purpose, future directions, broad basic policies, and
# e( e1 C0 C* R, laims and objectives of the organizations are decided upon by this process. It should
]: B8 y6 ?* H: }8 ~6 N2 f7 I+ x( C( E" Ybe noted that the board members make the policy decisions guided by membership: X1 n W; X0 S; f! W& o; b
participation and the Coordinator should confine his or her activities to helping and2 k2 b6 z) z* x# G" P) u
facilitating this process with the Board. The Coordinator attends all board of1 E/ Z' K+ T2 w, A+ y7 t
directors' meetings and make available a business report and a monthly financial3 J- T+ p) A2 g) m
statement as a minimum requirement. She/he brings to the board's attention all7 ]# ^5 [! S f I, e0 c* D
matters requiring board consideration and action. She/he confers with the board of: H& @: ]; ~2 D5 z2 ~! g
directors on the development of new policies and appraises the effectiveness of

3. Experience in writing grant proposals and accessing funding& h% l% n e3 ~* T

8. A diploma or degree in Social Work, the Social Sciences, Public Health, or

community level
