 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

F& P D1 W6 B8 c$ C) B" Y+ @ The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
6 I5 c3 w, _4 d. V$ @: bto their first ministry, to reopen a church # A$ T/ b/ Z1 l) ?( Q" m
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
5 G; |0 x8 N+ Q" ~ Fexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
, P, i; h# k0 ctheir church, it was very run down and needed
7 N4 R+ L9 u+ R7 gmuch work. They set a goal to have everything
0 V1 ]- B. z4 M! ^+ n* }, K# ?done in time to have their first service
. b: M. L8 [$ n W$ lon Christmas Eve. u$ [# ?3 {( u; k8 @
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,+ \+ f6 Z: m& M2 V$ B- T9 t- q9 t, p. u
painting, etc, and on December 18 + T2 O/ }! E5 A+ x( l
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. ( W6 S+ Z0 V& w' l' d) U
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving ! n1 I5 L7 W) b, l i8 {( t0 j
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 0 Q ~- i7 W4 K4 k
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.2 Q6 a4 }- K; m% V* x
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had7 n P: K l' N3 N% D; V
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about / d3 q' L$ C1 t" M( j+ c
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall , \8 Y+ v- p' c7 M$ ], \" B, m* P
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
' O9 t; s8 t6 w* y2 rbeginning about head high.
( J0 R1 e" D& S& Q1 x4 r+ qT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, ) R8 C+ j+ N" `( j6 L7 o( ^# K
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
* u' s, n& }+ P9 P) w. T' |the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
" \# [+ G* Q8 c9 E2 z! [8 xOn the way he noticed that a local business was
) @: m6 @7 n; \* g: k+ U! m* K( Jhaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
5 w5 c! S+ w+ S, Y$ W' p& D* n, astopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, . A1 w- h5 z+ S( K& I( s
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth ) m2 ~- F- U! o2 ^
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
9 t, h h0 `( N7 U0 N2 f8 aembroidered right in the center. It was just
4 y: i5 P$ D, f0 F1 x 6 G/ H- r1 L) t' ~! u# a; [/ F" Y8 S
4 z% z6 N- `& M; r# t$ n7 y
4 E* H& z* W V4 C7 ^: k
7 ? M, U7 J0 b5 Z * Z# l0 q& p2 u% f* N
" l9 P U2 s% j& t9 r
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. 9 h9 u8 D0 u2 O& `, r
B y this time it had started to snow. An older 7 }4 D& R% Z( O1 v0 o" A2 V: Z
woman running from the opposite direction was 9 e2 a, o6 x3 V/ F9 a
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor V9 B6 X* L; ] d/ H
invited her to wait in the warm church for
5 e3 Z) v2 _/ j, v" \the next bus 45 minutes later.
! ^( w4 `" I; [3 H8 d' E8 B; m; I. ~4 }% ~7 O: V/ e- n
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor 3 n0 Y1 z# p2 \$ ?1 x& M% r& }& U
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
0 o0 d5 N1 y3 |) Cup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
8 o1 p1 ~( B8 U4 b! o1 Ucould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. + M9 l8 }6 {* R3 _' ^ _8 S0 j
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center; _% c l0 {' Q, B
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"1 {+ B& E( p$ z7 ~9 C" [/ r
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
& h1 ?* k( f) j% n4 X WThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
6 i' I, K) }$ e- v* F3 C( P1 xthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
/ B7 O% K$ ^. m& Dit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 2 q' a0 d; `; O3 N
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . * W! ^$ Y' F$ q! G8 F8 _1 D k4 r
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor " G5 \3 |# \2 ]9 Q" f& ~6 K
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
& ^) V9 y' J4 V8 i7 vwoman explained that before the war she and " M5 w2 `4 M& q$ M+ h) B
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .

1 L: C$ F" n7 gWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
% A/ r' U$ {5 `9 X$ ?Her husband was going to follow her the next week. 1 i2 d+ @" x4 P4 P) w3 E
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her ; R |1 \) X/ R9 D
husband or her home again.
4 Z1 R8 c/ O( s! m5 {T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;0 X1 m% y+ D6 h8 j+ c
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
# l2 `/ Z: i! W9 qThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That# v5 R- c! j) o- T0 d3 l
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
! S! a5 _# }: Z, |side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
& j* `; C& `1 w" k* z1 [7 N9 Ufor the day for a housecleaning job.5 m- R6 t% u# n8 [
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas ( n5 T+ P% f) J" o
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
2 i: {1 @4 I# k& ?- y# `; t3 m+ c# Q8 C" Vspirit were great. At the end of the service, the
Y# S+ D3 x! J' S! Qpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
& S" ~ e5 m; j$ _, ^5 ]& zand many said that they would return..
3 Y* q* U6 h- G+ m1 ^( BOne older man, whom the pastor recognized ) O$ |$ _5 t9 h& x7 C+ c' ^/ g
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the & D/ f3 x6 |/ U( B; k- o
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he " V; f2 Y# h3 h/ O
wasn't leaving.
$ o7 O: {5 v+ e: GThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on # b0 @) y6 M, N" y; I
the front wall because it was identical to one ' D. e& z! N& r! T v
that his wife had made years ago when
6 Y2 ^8 r$ B- Othey lived in Austria before the war and how ( Q5 Z T- i( O5 N7 D! e# g
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? ; @1 v: [* M$ S# @; Z
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
" ^- |5 D- j) {( D, |7 {/ s, rforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was : i4 E. d" E# g& I, D) J
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and# R" U) s6 _% z. p1 K
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
& P1 [3 H; V2 Y/ ]' @again all the 35 years between.
7 |. ~# [) k/ C' ^$ s! D0 MT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
0 ?- H- R. ]/ g+ Y/ M' ltake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten ' ^6 q" V8 A; i# s
Island and to the same house where the pastor
; }) D' [0 c3 U6 d& E4 Ohad taken the woman three days earlier. 4 U" U$ Q: I0 L: w, f) S
He helped the man climb the three flights of
" l% [" C D; J9 u! D# h* Hstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
) i1 l2 i0 j2 |the door and he saw the greatest Christmas 3 K/ s1 c/ u5 ]
reunion he could ever imagine.
