"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.! I& A! h4 a2 j9 l+ k% c& A
The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.( n9 I3 U. y# @, s: r2 @% B/ k
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.8 s5 F* N6 s2 J- o- O$ V: b, V3 _8 @6 y
"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. - A2 g$ [& Y/ v: A
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.8 o! g& D% A8 f% S) s% \8 G' C4 L
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
