Edmonton's population grows by 30,000

' [1 {2 Z1 y! T1 u2 sEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.6 b$ I9 N# T1 Q Q4 z$ L
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
3 @/ y. r- C/ T/ |6 v2 \The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.: r% y$ d0 ~) Z, u: e% i
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.0 a4 w0 T+ p) g+ P! Z; V
"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
8 S- k! n! P, p$ P7 e* n LEdmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.+ p4 v5 V& J& _3 M' x1 o
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
