WHAT: Water pump bearings.
1 i, V; L6 t: g' k8 }1 HURGENCY: When the bearings fail completely, the fan will pull forward and slice a nice big smile-shaped chunk out of the radiator, making it leak profusely.$ O+ Z$ r5 n8 u3 n- u% O
FIX: You need a new pump.% O0 J7 e% l& a% c( L) R

WHEN: Whenever you rotate the steering wheel all the way to the left or right steering stop and hold it there.
1 j( `' r$ v& U' q, iWHAT: The pressure relief valve inside the pump is dumping excess power-steering hydraulic fluid back into the reservoir. It's supposed to do that, although maybe a little more quietly.
4 ?7 U/ G: J, y2 N7 a- W0 YURGENCY: No big deal.
C$ A" v0 g' P i" CFIX: It's normal. Actually, you should check the level of power steering fluid in the pump. Don't hold the wheel hard on the stop like that; it annoys pedestrians and is tough on the belt.

WHEN: Right after start-up until you rev the throttle a couple of times and the rubber warms up.
, m' d+ {5 Q }+ p% O, _WHAT: Belt squeal. A loose or glazed belt, bad tensioner or misaligned pulley.
]' N- Y& k+ h7 s7 J! L' x" D. ^URGENCY: Make an appointment, and don't take a long trip. This won't go away on its own--until just before the belt fails.% N {' E! t$ S% Q1 N7 b
FIX: Check belt tension and pulley alignment; replace the belt. |
