SCOPE OF THE CONSTRUCTION ELECTRICIAN OCCUPATION

training and abilities, is capable of laying out, installing, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical. W+ J$ e% J: A' b& ?+ W" j$ z
systems, which provides light, heat, communications, and power to a variety of new and existing/ Z; j1 x9 f1 ]- v* `9 L, }9 ^
residential, commercial, and industrial structures./ l- U3 u E7 C& v( g5 w
Construction electricians read and interpret electrical, mechanical, and architectural drawings% P, L, g- N) w" W& X+ v: e& z
and electrical code specifications to determine wiring layout. They cut, thread, bend, assemble, and
5 |9 U+ V1 b3 f4 Pinstall conduits and other types of electrical conductor enclosures and fittings. They pull wire and cable
+ h( G& J# x$ Q i5 H! Ithrough conduits, position, maintain and install distribution and control equipment such as switches,6 P, Y( Q8 y1 |& c% K
relays, circuit breaker panels, and fuse enclosures, install single and multi-wire cables above and
. H1 L3 L% j+ Ounderground, install data cabling, and install and maintain fibre optic and signalling systems.
) j2 ?" d. q) BConstruction electricians work in the full range of environmental conditions: from outside in
& j5 M$ p% V" a+ @6 C* s4 jall weathers; inside in dusty industrial plants and mills; to state-of-the-art clean-rooms in hospitals and4 Z B; H/ z/ I8 Q: U8 ~+ H
manufacturing plants. The work often requires considerable standing, bending, crawling, lifting,8 {) s. p; t2 g5 q: y) D
climbing, pulling, and reaching and may be conducted in cramped, confined spaces or on ladders and% S, U9 o# [5 F! ] p: y" h3 V( B
scaffolding at great heights. Hazards include electric shocks, burns, and falling objects.& u' i* C n6 A
Construction electricians are required to have good mechanical ability, a thorough
, Y2 [* y0 J7 r: E: Lknowledge of the principles of electricity, circuitry, and power distribution systems, and familiarity with5 h; \& T2 u: `& r: F/ \' {1 G
the materials and techniques of construction. All construction electricians are required to be competent in

All electrical wiring and installations must conform to the CSA Canadian Electrical Code.

On small jobs, construction electricians may work alone with minimal supervision, and they

and air-conditioning technicians. They are required to constantly adjust their schedule and work to

wired environment requires construction electricians to be able to install a variety of wiring such as data,1 O2 f2 q; [" o0 K
audio, video, signalling, and communication cabling. Electrical control systems are also becoming more( j$ y) X' Y6 a2 t
complex, often solid-state or computer-controlled, which requires the construction electrician to have a
