EDMONTON - Prices for new homes in Edmonton fell 5.3 per cent in July compared to the same month last year, marking the biggest year-over-year drop in 23 years, said Statistics Canada today.- Z4 e. a( f0 X1 r0 f' `

) q8 W% w; I$ M6 A) HEven heated Saskatoon posted a slower annual increase of 13.1 per cent, "further confirmation of a trend of deceleration in this city. Many builders reported increased prices as a result of higher material and labour costs," the agency said.6 @/ B1 ~8 x$ r, n o8 k) g/ ^

The fastest pace was in Regina, which saw a year-over-year price increase of 29.6 per cent, down from its record rise of 34 per cent in April.* U! R& c* r; @: _

As the market continued to cool in Western Canada, prices for new homes rose nationally at a slower pace in July for the sixth consecutive month.( Q" E' c4 Y/ m$ S) a0 g
6 m" ~+ r/ u& R# C" l1 RPrices were up 2.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, down from June's annual pace of 3.5 per cent. On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.1 per cent between June and July.

"The growth rate of the index has been on a downward trend since September 2006," the agency said.
