3 p# q1 E7 Y# QThe Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers requires a fulltime Settlement Practitioner to deliver settlement services for Temporary Foreign Workers in the Edmonton region. This is a term position to March 31, 2010.. s2 [. q9 C( A* n6 w

The project will focus on the following aspects of newcomers settlement services:

• Outreach delivery of “orientation, information and referral services”

Position Description:
# N/ h4 |& |; w( p; a3 w4 k( HThe Settlement Practitioner will be a front line practitioner, providing settlement
& N" h; |; }* ~! oguidance, information, orientation and referral services for Temporary Foreign
: I! U$ {( H: i1 K% AWorkers, including matters of employment, housing, language, immigration and
* g* [ j) Y/ }5 u) L9 h @supportive counselling by telephone, emails and in-person.+ G8 f, Q: x+ N$ t
: U3 b! }! b% o5 ~The Settlement Practitioner will also be required to deliver information and. H* x# h. X! p( Y7 ~+ m3 ?6 n
orientation workshops related to settlement needs of Temporary Foreign workers.9 B$ w& |( R6 }# u7 D# k& o" q
Workshops and group sessions will be centre-based, employer/industry based and
& V: }) A; ?" q9 B# lcommunity based. Some internal and outreach weekend workshop facilitation is9 q6 `7 I7 e9 W* Z5 v' q
required. The ability to work flexible hours is essential.

This position involves working as part of a team to provide services, create an

Responsibilities
* t0 Z& b9 G9 I0 t$ |. ^3 h c• Provide a detailed needs assessment of TFW’s referred from EMCN staff,other service providers, industry employers, as well as self-referrals8 e+ Z, r, n3 k \7 q" w8 h
• Establish and maintain relationships between EMCN, other service providers and industries employing temporary foreign workers and promote settlement services at EMCN8 ^# q7 F5 G% ]9 o3 }
• Maintain close relationships with the Temporary Foreign Worker Advisory Office! X8 G4 ~, J6 o+ Z6 ^
• Provide counselling to help temporary foreign workers adjust to Canadian life,make referrals when appropriate, develop needs assessment and action plans if required; c! K% B8 u1 \% ], H1 H( B; s4 {* w
• Assist people to fill in application forms, prepare for meetings or appointments relating to settlement or employment
; \$ `8 `$ w8 s9 H ]6 v• Take clients to view apartments, open bank accounts, register for healthcare and become familiar with community services$ t" S% ~( x' i* o
• Assess and refer individuals experiencing critical or complex immigration and employment difficulties to appropriate service provider or government agency- L3 I. A/ f3 g( i+ ]; s% ?
• Facilitate and coordinate delivery of workshops related to settlement of TFW 5 |8 i8 B# Y3 B$ j8 L' t
• Promote English language services for TFW and employers
% O( @3 X+ D% M8 D4 p# O9 w• Arrange interpretation and translation services as required

• Provide service delivery duties as required Desired skills, education and experience:. l7 H1 Y( o2 j7 u
• Minimum of 2 years of previous experience as a Settlement Practitioner in an intercultural/multicultural/cross-cultural context7 Z5 n0 K9 {2 q/ s- X
• Relevant post-secondary education in social science or human service area
/ }4 M, m' i3 s% R& Z- J7 }• Excellent written and oral communication skills. R+ J4 X, {4 ^6 p* S5 p" _
• Strong commitment to providing quality services to newcomers and to working in an intercultural environment with cultural competence" T' D3 V: J9 X9 f
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-based workplace, demonstrating flexibility in organizing work, showing initiative,judgment, resourcefulness, good decision-making
+ `5 Z3 i: h: S• Proficiency in English is essential, as is fluency in other languages
