The Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers requires a fulltime Settlement Practitioner to deliver settlement services for Temporary Foreign Workers in the Edmonton region. This is a term position to March 31, 2010.

: j7 n9 g/ i3 M& k* iThe project will focus on the following aspects of newcomers settlement services:
• Marketing and outreach to industry and workers
* I" _7 G+ r1 j7 f# Z+ g0 H• Outreach delivery of “orientation, information and referral services”
9 W- w+ \$ H. P5 o; ~4 ]• Centre-based delivery of “orientation, information and referral services”

Position Description:
" r5 n0 i0 i2 p4 H6 d: Q- FThe Settlement Practitioner will be a front line practitioner, providing settlement
6 V9 i( K3 f6 g7 r3 ?guidance, information, orientation and referral services for Temporary Foreign
+ `$ Y1 U: P. P2 C' a/ W$ E' O+ Z6 zWorkers, including matters of employment, housing, language, immigration and
supportive counselling by telephone, emails and in-person.

9 X) b. X# ]  o5 |The Settlement Practitioner will also be required to deliver information and
. Z& y+ E8 K5 i% Vorientation workshops related to settlement needs of Temporary Foreign workers.
; X( K5 `$ C3 c' c* M1 I$ yWorkshops and group sessions will be centre-based, employer/industry based and
( e( l+ A- m* {1 v; y( W! A  u7 D# l+ Lcommunity based. Some internal and outreach weekend workshop facilitation is
required. The ability to work flexible hours is essential.

, @! }' e1 P/ mThis position involves working as part of a team to provide services, create an
understanding of temporary foreign worker settlement issues, being innovative and
implementing solutions for TFW facing a variety of challenges. It also involves
* E7 T; _4 K& Qmaintaining all information and records required by the program guidelines.

Responsibilities
; b& ]* n  D* N' s: x5 i; y1 D  @% [• Provide a detailed needs assessment of TFW’s referred from EMCN staff,other service providers, industry employers, as well as self-referrals
• Establish and maintain relationships between EMCN, other service providers and industries employing temporary foreign workers and promote settlement services at EMCN
• Maintain close relationships with the Temporary Foreign Worker Advisory Office
% [2 p2 w% e; F8 {• Provide counselling to help temporary foreign workers adjust to Canadian life,make referrals when appropriate, develop needs assessment and action plans if required
• Assist people to fill in application forms, prepare for meetings or appointments relating to settlement or employment
" M" y* E+ {4 \1 A• Take clients to view apartments, open bank accounts, register for healthcare and become familiar with community services
1 U! Q4 A& o3 F) z5 T• Assess and refer individuals experiencing critical or complex immigration and employment difficulties to appropriate service provider or government agency
• Facilitate and coordinate delivery of workshops related to settlement of TFW
. \/ W' p# Q, q2 q1 f• Promote English language services for TFW and employers
; K9 Q+ |- l6 ]! i* e, X• Arrange interpretation and translation services as required
• Strengthen and build supports with community groups and volunteers
• Provide service delivery duties as required Desired skills, education and experience:
• Minimum of 2 years of previous experience as a Settlement Practitioner in an intercultural/multicultural/cross-cultural context
$ N  Y! f- E8 g0 c  J& s5 M; p• Relevant post-secondary education in social science or human service area
7 s$ N0 c+ t$ t• Excellent written and oral communication skills
- L* B7 _! E8 }+ ~+ B7 J0 r, a• Strong commitment to providing quality services to newcomers and to working in an intercultural environment with cultural competence
. J5 X( @; d  U2 V( F; s; ^  E' U• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-based workplace, demonstrating flexibility in organizing work, showing initiative,judgment, resourcefulness, good decision-making
4 Q7 ^# p# I+ ~$ F( a• Proficiency in English is essential, as is fluency in other languages
2 r( N4 r* h7 y' @  X( n4 ^: o• Spanish language proficiency is an asset
