" E1 K8 I; F- s' ^% ZGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
0 h0 h$ k' C0 a) N% Qnews to report from that meeting.

; S6 l- J3 s& g" y7 y6 b5 s7 P4 LFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
. x( D: F6 } lundergraduate international students from the increase to the " B& y3 H* l+ e3 L
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international - [0 U; T7 m: u" c
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
% [* P3 H4 E( x2 w& ?8 otuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
6 O; p6 L$ U# F4 n1 b& e, {) WAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase - W2 R/ f" f x) i. D1 q
the differential for international graduate students.

Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
7 {. n8 X$ {. I, [( |" dincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to " W& M7 A4 v# ^% f! E9 O& V$ D, k& X
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 7 x% K z" Y ~ q9 U
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 2 m6 x7 f2 L. Q
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in % H) ]8 i4 c+ V* {) m4 \
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected / }# `7 ? _1 x/ n7 ]
increases once they are here." Q: D$ n% N! }2 s: y6 ^

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the " L# f3 O7 \0 ?1 A
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
f4 o# m" k0 j0 s! i9 Jwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
7 ^" K0 ^& T" g* k( w4 V) }have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
* s+ z5 i+ B/ A) lincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your + l9 |6 e/ E, y
help. Thank you.
