Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

' F3 I2 u. j$ cYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 9 m8 u6 W D/ o6 d- @5 f$ }5 R; W$ B( ^3 o
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 8 w" T* v Z- w# p0 ^, C6 L
news to report from that meeting.& V- w( G, ?; F9 E' h1 {$ m# X* ]5 z
! z | k7 l; G y# r! S2 E
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
6 ?0 {& }( H0 j# Qundergraduate international students from the increase to the
7 D! p+ l7 [7 Rdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international + Z+ |8 U9 d _0 V P, _6 Z0 }% `
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
% H* c( t/ A* q( K5 C" ftuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
: x3 K# I- h* s2 d6 VAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
$ u4 v! c5 k2 _8 |the differential for international graduate students.7 S9 w" V9 Z3 |
* B V- S3 e, H8 Y5 u& }9 sNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
; C+ d$ v. P& U, @+ J# n5 K$ r- nincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
G! A7 H7 i: r( J( O Y3 r220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students " f& D% F# x1 H; ]. A4 B; y
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 8 G n* D- C5 Y% h( m* [$ k
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in ! k- o3 r6 j: Q ]
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
) V4 s; X* b( n: w# |8 iincreases once they are here.3 A W" G3 d# m9 _# S& ^
/ I5 D1 c/ z$ q. o4 z
The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
) y- q5 Y3 w. [. Y2 w) d8 Binternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
m9 }& U2 B0 j8 ^1 F' Ewould like to say thank you to all of the international students that ; l* Z g: i( e* d0 O( o; d# `
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this # d4 `. n& }3 K# ]( \" R
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your - }+ x& u2 p- L
help. Thank you.
