Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties # w, T- Q) L G8 D% X4 r4 ?( \
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
) w3 Q5 W( y$ ]. T% o) a% c, gnews to report from that meeting.: e1 `/ s! B: I, s
: `5 q. T& `( |% C$ SFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current : ~' P( g* i f/ T6 L. x7 `- ], M, ?
undergraduate international students from the increase to the + U) g; q& g3 t _4 ?( H
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international # y" m/ p' e( D% y! O7 i% X
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base : Y& {/ T( s8 l" J9 f0 U
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
. j" F3 g* v+ i3 I- C2 F" h% X" TAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
: {) P u( Z# I1 e. t1 q# nthe differential for international graduate students.
: h: ]; U( N3 z6 J Z1 W
2 ^* j. Y3 I7 U0 }Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an + V" F. S* U+ _4 m* u
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
1 q7 Y8 F3 d- N. f+ T; t5 F220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 1 U, M$ a; ~: j7 {
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At # F( D% u( `1 I- [# l# y
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 7 I4 `5 ~$ M7 M+ Q" m
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected 7 M1 Q. n' D2 R" P6 a& L
increases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the : l7 P8 M" B& @: Z L, h0 B" E
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this $ \. J- U) m. @6 n2 b
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your ( o& U- l9 Y$ n y K
