, J: Q/ [/ {% gGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. / U/ u) G& ]5 i4 U

Dear International Undergraduate Students,; b6 |5 f3 D) Q" E& H/ v
9 ~ J* E$ Y2 P) eYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties ; L; x" p# Z O) E' v. I# k. k
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
0 R ?; h0 w0 v- ~8 ~news to report from that meeting.$ P I0 `- v3 J& ?4 ~! e" K$ g1 N z
. P) m3 F( ?6 z3 R& z# ?
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 8 i* W# ~. ], {9 ]
undergraduate international students from the increase to the , ]7 J; i# w6 T( O
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international 8 `8 N1 s: W" F3 ~$ w1 o
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
, I0 h4 U( F; D, o: K4 Ztuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 1 C! Y; x4 M' T9 Q* z+ \' W
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase * U2 C' T9 n" Q h: {3 \ f
the differential for international graduate students.* U4 n3 l) X, Q/ d
* Y. y, |$ L- x5 x% ?
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an / q+ b6 R4 k5 p( r) Q/ v
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to ' r( O% m! b9 M7 }; S# i
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 2 _8 q' V: J9 ^* E7 T; d
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At ; s) m1 @7 V* J! {6 L0 j4 {
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
: v8 ]. [: h1 Y5 a& J4 rtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
, Z+ l( e- `& P. Q) c( i# z5 d4 rincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 8 u4 g) z% S) v3 F% g4 E# o0 K
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
3 m) ~0 G) A- N2 p; ^+ m+ b* zwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that # D! l7 @% x$ t! E& q! U4 p
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this : U; I$ Q2 T: P
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your & B- ?! B, [0 `4 j
