Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. ; i K$ L1 ]# K

Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
( c T8 i! u) x* Q' B: j0 }news to report from that meeting." \$ K& {- W$ A- l4 g; X

First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current & ?$ p1 ^5 M1 m. |6 [' a A% Z
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
4 x" \) |3 ]. Q$ H. C" i4 Jdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
5 j& p% k3 n1 ~' j# K( ystudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
: s% t9 A8 {/ e/ l4 D. E! o: n6 m' Utuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
9 @9 l' G) P# a% k( ZAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase ) C7 e) `3 Y, V( @* ^
the differential for international graduate students.! f$ C3 G" j* o6 V: B% r4 t m
' x4 j5 f9 s) D( R2 S7 PNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
8 R6 C0 |6 A6 {# D& Gincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to ; k8 c: b* ]- \( D% l* E8 V! r M
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students ; e( W; G+ I0 |! _' c5 v
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
6 j6 G7 f9 S. v! b( wleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
) [, w8 u" g. R+ _3 I. Ituition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected 5 F, u3 @% P; U) G$ \$ A
increases once they are here., I' f9 Z5 l8 x! {$ ^* @( {3 Y
0 u; W, b; J, f/ N) z, ^The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
' Q% N$ f; [4 F4 |4 e( tinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
( P3 L# j& p. i* J9 a1 nwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
9 e* ^4 H, j5 x( T) xhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
$ e; O% [9 Y1 a( Q, nincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
