Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. 5 S$ l# _- f) e e$ U

Dear International Undergraduate Students,$ l; C" L7 U" i, ]' j. `$ u

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 4 O+ R: M& l5 D9 U" K
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad ( z/ \2 @( L& X2 I. x
news to report from that meeting.

9 p) B& X- X9 D+ u& C8 Q1 vFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current # P- V. g! F0 R8 w# Y% _
undergraduate international students from the increase to the / o, K: U2 D( h6 G& f/ w' n
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
: h/ Y# f- \; tstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base " I$ v7 Y0 e4 f; O" t: N
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
c( K; @+ M4 Y" d BAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
: v$ R. Z9 i( i7 q9 a; @the differential for international graduate students.
7 }# Y* S) \! ?, b: O3 V U, ]5 M3 r7 L: H4 _: ^1 }- ^, _# b
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an * [! Q/ k1 m5 L' [, Q6 k
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to * P [ l/ g" |6 D1 X# { N
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
3 {" O" \0 a% W5 X& ]! ywill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
! T3 L2 `3 r% m. F; @least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 6 ?* R+ u' a0 I) d8 {" t5 B
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
- v* W% Y1 {+ Hincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the / x5 ^! F9 _2 p3 \) W& M' ~+ l
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I / Q8 c/ q/ m) Q' E: C
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
6 J/ M. k8 r3 ?have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this ) @7 V0 {8 N# W2 d! E
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
