When arrived to Edmonton to start my graduate studies on 2004, me and

and most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were

" a& c, _+ o! J3 B; }2 R0 d0 NWhile the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has / j4 A% n7 c; L* J6 Z
increased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid & v- @- u8 X+ I0 G6 J' Q4 A
exactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our
( n' x* a. n1 m7 R+ N. L5 y& Xadmission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students 8 L5 D" x* f+ Y1 ?. l
=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after
9 L+ Y' k: ], p- w% n" v* ]tuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just
( D1 S5 B) b$ r2 M1 E' Pimagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am + i* M; x$ b0 v% T/ t7 T0 F1 b) R
getting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of - i- C% v! V) o! X
us) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was
* \7 H* S: z* x. ladmitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.

Alberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants

students are the main pillars of research work at the university.

is to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and
( R: t+ x; I6 g4 v0 s" ^* t! [especially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take
y1 h' t+ W1 k* `8 B+ X) n. |+ `
- H2 O' v& W2 J6 dinitiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for 9 f6 E, ]; ]3 ^1 e% x: Y% {
graduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?
