CHIEF RETURNING OFFICER

Remuneration: $6,032.00 contract+ @. E" E, n- e9 J! [: C# c" E

JOB SUMMARY:  The Chief Returning Officer reports to the President of  
' v0 ^' i3 u# A9 hthe Students' Union and oversees all electoral logistics as per Bylaw  
2 ]! \6 v$ E# s# [# X2000.  The Chief Returning Officer shall be recommended to Students'  0 X% y" k( x1 F; B  E
Council in the manner set out in the Council Administration Committee  
# ^7 j& `. ~! w9 r" @; TStanding Orders by April 15 and serve from May 1 to April 30 of the  8 K9 C4 {0 n6 n+ A/ n
year following their appointment.

0 n- r# j: `6 N* ^& u! jDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

3 y3 \8 h- U4 n% ]1) To run the elections as per Bylaws 20009 R& K7 h! |0 N. l
+ v  m7 m; }. ?  g4 i& d/ q
2) To run referenda/plebiscites as per Bylaw 2000.

& |  @- F: o6 o- s, f1 B+ w3) To choose the Deputy Returning Officer(s) and assign their duties.

# X4 W& w$ I8 X; E3 {4) To organize polls during elections/referenda, including appointing  
3 Y# K  ~- Q. _/ T- I( p8 _) ?! |adequate poll staff and situating polls at appropriate locations  " j& H' }* |1 K1 Q; \: X
across campus, and advertising the poll locations.
; h* h1 A' b3 u; j; m: e
8 l. x  i+ r; R" K5) To oversee the physical count of the ballots during elections/
/ b6 S1 w( K9 _0 Sreferenda.7 F5 t( s& e6 D4 {

6 t1 U# C! ~% ~6) To report the result of an election/referendum to the appropriate  ( s8 y! Q8 Q& P" p7 `3 y
parties.
) m& V: Q% S* k" g5 H  D+ Y! I3 h9 V5 A8 t5 ]
7) To facilitate classroom speaking arrangements during an election/ 3 i- a  \- w3 ]% R
referendum.& S6 o$ \$ m0 ~9 ~) g; o6 {9 y

1 b9 P" p7 l6 R1 [/ l7 F9 F To enforce budgetary regulations as stipulated in the Elections  ) T7 T1 R3 G1 g
Bylaw 2000.7 Q+ A% D0 p8 ?7 J

5 d' w+ w" I6 q10) To be available to all parties during elections/referenda for a  
% E4 [+ l: @4 V" d9 o# {minimum of four (4) working hours a day, between Monday to Friday,  
2 }0 k9 b& R$ k+ N2 y8 f& Sfrom the first working day after nominations close until the last day  
  x1 Q, i+ ]: g9 ]of voting.  These hours are to be posted in advance.8 G. B* _4 Z' U* K
9 D1 b& K  F" a2 l- A
11) To act as the arbitrator in any dispute which may arise during  
, \5 I. E0 |( [the course of an election/referendum.6 n3 ?+ S/ F! b9 Y# S& A* y

8 n9 |7 b7 I( x6 o8 P) e12) To ensure that a cost effective and accurate ballot counting  
- [5 Q9 q! x9 v: y8 P4 x7 p. J9 f/ nprocess is in place.1 ?( }  @5 R; Q; R( N

5 _) N$ z6 x+ z1 h13) To submit to Students' Council, prior to April 30, a final report  . E+ a8 [/ u" P7 j
of activities and recommendations.

14) To organize a minimum of one (1) forum to be held during the week  
7 H# ]3 |/ l; g. bof campaigning.

15) Perform other job related duties as required by the Council  
) m  c5 n& v, F' }9 ]4 ^Administration Committee.( f2 e# Z( _7 s: Q

9 A. g$ d! F( l% w7 v+ R) K: cQUALIFICATIONS:
. U1 [. c% T7 \6 b3 m9 ]9 Y; B
1 r  A  j# J2 K1 G5 @% S7 j' Q+ b1) Must be an undergrad student registered in at least one (1) course  
6 S% Y: J! q% h* g8 Rfor each of the terms of Winter Session and shall be a full Students'  + B% h  o5 m7 c% L4 y# _
Union member.
4 {7 S4 C, f- S3 y& ?: f/ E% v  y1 V+ C7 Q
2) Must have some experience in student elections.
; Z2 t. A8 a) X* {1 D# l
* `9 G. u& z2 e& H8 m5 [8 t3) Shall not concurrently hold a position on Students' Council, or  
' c$ @5 c( c$ xany of its standing boards, committees, or any other paid position  
/ K2 ]- V* L- g( ?with the Students' Union.2 z8 b# s- L2 m  H. W" r* a, J

5) Excellent project management skills are required.

5) Ability to deal effectively with Students' Union and University
