In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community" S+ {- R8 T2 X, J9 u) N
Engagement Training.. T4 w' w( n* {. @
( C) e! L H! iWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,2 ?7 S8 h: _; k$ J* z
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
$ c* f2 V! T$ qgroups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
% q* c# {3 e0 a% D+ wtogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
8 V& T9 c9 m& q$ a. c; |Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.) A( T5 |! g8 ~4 x7 [

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South
0 N* Q2 Y( m" O# [1 D: \# ]Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years
; l0 ?" n7 M1 Z' @of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter- G1 O9 u/ Z1 f1 n. r+ Z& C7 E; t
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the6 c6 ~/ y8 k1 C
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
' ?) E: d8 T: _( {- ?+ [) nthey come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter# v# |" j% z, w9 S' O! Y* Z+ E4 H
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
4 \2 C' {8 T7 h! F6 _$ P/ Y# Q7 Risland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
! z; Z9 H& ?- {' N& xinternational peacekeeping operation.& G( ^, X& x8 }( C# N6 X# P' E

This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their4 i6 K7 x6 W0 Y) v4 `7 W: a9 j
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
2 v; ?2 E0 V, [7 F$ ?0 Fwho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV' e: b; E( b7 k+ A& l9 j6 b
screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and# t; X9 z4 \! ]7 T! I) M
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
1 m& _; ~2 p* t' O' p) w) Dimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
: n; C2 {# W- M2 e- ^) {and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!: f+ \7 ~! F8 r) }$ Q& m
% F. O2 z5 @0 h/ q# JAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the% N; \& m/ Y$ E! Z
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
4 A" |* s: }" jprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
3 u3 W" c4 Q; d8 W3 Khands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.9 s/ E' ], P" h
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,+ o% Q6 ^6 Q3 k* T: N: }
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."! s/ s* x# K2 w) K# G
