In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community

& D* b3 b3 f6 O" e' aWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
% X3 X' n/ u' s9 I(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
, n) [) X$ n& l3 c9 pgroups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
# o! H' |/ E, D% U+ A, Ntogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy( J4 w+ T1 ^% F' L9 K7 y9 z* r. ^
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.0 I5 ~1 q" o2 h

of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
# C3 q4 `, ?4 S1 }3 L2 n4 Hconflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the

+ ?( U6 }' w# m" O g: pthey come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
4 m1 Q- y7 V D a) }1 ^* N( O2 y: ^Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
9 J T% A, X3 H. Y. v" n8 oisland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed

This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their

who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV

Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems7 U2 S( E2 }' {* h
improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs. c/ g3 x, m; T4 E/ z. M$ C
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!& J4 F i4 |9 E
; b4 W+ B. V* _/ UAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the
5 {3 A1 H( I e5 Y3 c* Y% osuccess of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
% a- T }" c, ]; _8 o% g* s, U* vprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
9 r5 E2 d6 f% t% i' T; C5 Phands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around., S, C/ P) q5 e9 ~, n
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
