In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
+ z. c8 n U2 L7 G C3 X( R% UEngagement Training.
% G6 I, X7 |, e) C. k( Z. i9 m* ~+ D0 ~2 _0 f
We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
" a1 ?7 U8 _' v5 h5 N4 w(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood2 a1 n8 F7 W! D1 ?
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
. L; p( {" v( X) Q8 q/ \- ztogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
' O' N# P4 `& t' _: a0 R1 XCommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.4 L. g) g( v+ w. Y) G1 c

Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years$ `, Y2 o0 \: D3 \9 b- x
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
- o. }; e4 J5 n9 tconflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the. n9 w) H, e3 _2 a! R1 u3 j$ G
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
( x' |/ B* J t7 o! ^$ C k1 othey come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter! B8 ^1 V9 `" ~) G* F" O4 m; g0 Y
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
8 t- U! |& w. v3 q. risland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
6 U. K2 n2 G. _6 hinternational peacekeeping operation.

# b- @( `0 F! P" q8 F0 bThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their2 Q4 Z! d& r$ X, G) H
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
5 u- Z" u2 o( _( ?who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
8 x' M. p! O; ]1 ?( n9 fscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and5 s/ x8 j# q9 }* b
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems' e* @3 l8 y6 q! m8 w
improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
, {- U& m) t6 C, k Q; u, Land music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!

1 O& O+ W# `9 S6 eAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the
& j6 a- ~9 i$ e7 Y w8 K2 rsuccess of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole. P8 w2 F& X- U; n
process, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the5 O9 n& [! A5 m
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
6 }8 p* j& x! u7 o4 F9 v9 UAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
8 Y3 d8 R! B8 |) j, T8 Uso we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."3 x. B7 B) E. Z2 E4 A' ~
