I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.

5 i; t! y7 q" F' ~We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday," S4 B3 k* @5 ^
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood) Y0 A# Q, F# T2 p" ^
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
6 a* m* r Z G$ w' Itogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy3 w2 o# H5 B' \0 y9 x3 ~
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.* }( M3 D% m3 C# I- K" `/ n3 F5 l) ^7 e! w

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South
- n! c K/ ~, _( nPacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years4 U5 j+ T# a- A1 M8 z2 r) `
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter: L. h/ f& G: A4 o) `6 @
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
5 \; l& D2 q2 X+ `: Finternational community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
! N# _* i$ ^1 [they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter/ R! x) ^0 N0 s: j: n* E. X
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the4 G: O" x( @) _# E
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed K1 r; s1 s8 u& i4 m3 v. i8 ?6 r5 B
international peacekeeping operation.
# H, z( o# C% v* ^6 Q5 w+ E# o7 Y4 _, r% d
This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their" [1 _/ h4 x" { }' m; J9 [# N
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people5 |$ F/ B) {+ f- I6 ~4 m; a
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
) b" o( O# d0 y6 sscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and9 N, b4 m$ I. z% z8 _: o
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
; x5 h& @2 H: O$ y" |& s) G& Kimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
! o- h7 s9 G2 e% x7 O+ Mand music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!% v: F& ^. m5 G. Z* V
y* t/ Y* d" |3 xAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the% A9 T- ~4 [9 c/ O+ j2 `* B+ h5 g
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
( K# b% v* k0 O+ Sprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the: J; P7 F' M0 h; W1 I% a! u9 ]
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
+ N( o+ t' m; kAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything, p: C# W& m4 Y: p5 C- \8 R o! j- X
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
