1) Community Dialogue Project Phase 1
# P% w9 }/ T6 G9 HI'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project." B, [% S+ K+ I3 I4 [9 E, W7 w
In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
7 J% x+ Z* B3 ~Engagement Training.

) A; K/ }0 Z3 r5 R9 b1 dWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
4 N8 D* C, s7 e(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood7 u+ m7 c0 d$ E1 u% e! J
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work* ?$ h+ d8 Y" R" u% s
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy8 n( T b% k- V4 q: I, U
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.# ?: V4 a7 `, F3 y0 \+ u0 [# h$ C

of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
" ?) O3 C/ D( N* B) ~conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the
& Z- x S- C3 |( Sinternational community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
' R6 K) j0 c( N# d9 {2 B. U& {6 sthey come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
: v& o) U% a3 r$ C% QIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
9 y4 v. z/ w1 F1 n7 @9 R4 p7 Xisland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed- l' c: l6 [3 c7 d3 q4 M

and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!

According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the
, A' E" ~$ w, t/ h$ O" ksuccess of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
* u0 n4 l5 e2 J' j* Q2 `' Bprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
3 B1 e, U" h8 ~; _hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.1 L5 d3 h% \, b7 D" c
Also, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,1 e* M# O+ t' [+ P. ~
