* R4 G8 A1 Y" G, ZIn phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community! u& y0 H0 K5 x7 u
Engagement Training.& u/ o/ L* P- T7 k/ ?
- ~3 O' l( f1 L9 zWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
: Z' Y" C3 b6 z' V& t- q- V(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood# e6 O$ A9 \1 b) S
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work$ B+ p0 m7 m# W5 X4 B! _5 |
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
) W& F [/ X1 m" J; h$ r4 K& l. jCommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.& i! s9 @; I* q& L- v9 [8 w- h7 B9 @

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South
8 z' a' a1 n, ~Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years
4 {2 G O( W( e+ ]3 z, N! o2 vof fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter( `3 f% m2 p9 ^9 ? A# n
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the/ d2 J/ l ^. j% d/ \3 D
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:4 I e7 P, G* @- T! v
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
: t, v, F& p+ E0 U7 x; TIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
& l( L4 K( x0 Bisland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
! y# {6 w+ O A/ Zinternational peacekeeping operation." m) J$ k. h& o8 J! D
, P2 o7 k) L" r9 d3 u1 O1 A# f3 Q4 uThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their9 p; K. L( R* @
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people$ F! A" @& [0 U; v! H) Y1 W
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
% p$ k% A r' q6 V0 t% _screens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and& b+ Y/ T5 H/ l+ C
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems/ b* H& ]5 d4 h: l/ ] I7 g
improbable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
2 ?, | ]$ Z- `* Gand music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!
( F9 q$ F+ Z& Y3 {- T& s. T1 n+ j: {$ P0 L2 J
According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the( |2 \# E1 G* k8 X' W3 k6 T
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
" j% L8 e9 S! {1 Aprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
. r4 j# P% m( I) }; y$ J1 k) {- Nhands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
* U) q1 y: u) nAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,% y' |- q' o7 Z7 t2 y
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
