　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,

　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

　　One single white immensity.
7 J2 e- k- c. Q3 B
  @$ K% b+ s, a' U5 b; @' t　　The Yellow River"s swift current

7 C6 F8 f/ k/ P& _6 ]　　Is stilled from end to end.

　　The mountains dance like silver snakes

　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

  E5 Z. L( D, V) ~3 F3 V8 l$ s　　Vying with heaven in stature.

　　Clad in white, adorned in red,

　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti

　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu

　　Had little poetry in their souls;
　　And Genghis Khan,

　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,

　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched

　　For truly great men
