Edmonton – Mill Woods is one of the city’s most diverse ridings, with people who have immigrated from all over the world calling it home.* n2 L" o6 W. E* H `
/ d5 Y! }/ l) Q9 EAs a result, immigration and controversial laws around citizenship are coming up a bit more often on the doors, say candidates.( V, }1 K& N, \, y0 P* n* j
Conservative candidate Tim Uppal said his party has an excellent record on welcoming newcomers.

- V6 [# e, T' S“Under this government, we have had the highest levels of sustained immigration in Canadian history,” he said.' s6 ?- M- P3 r. }2 [1 e# B) s
/ M# l: T4 x" e! n" w4 @Uppal also defends bill C-24, legislation that allows the government to strip citizenship from dual citizens convicted of terrorism or treason. He said when someone has been convicted and served their time of a charge as serious as terrorism it’s common sense to deport them. {# x/ r' K: X. T* D: Z; b
“If we can have their citizenship stripped, because they’re a dual citizen, than I would rather not have them in this country,” he said.

( P& `% J$ f. d. s$ M% CLiberal candidate Amarjeet Sohi said the Conservative bill is discriminatory, treating Canadians with dual citizenship as unequal.
/ b% a0 S/ O- A" g; ^“It will not make us safe,” he said. “Every Canadian should be treated the same, you can’t have different punishments for the same crime.”
0 \8 H' ^0 b GSohi said he would prefer convicted terrorist stay within the reach of Canadian law.

“People are really, really under fear and they want to see these changes,” he said.8 z" @$ R0 c4 m' v9 m
He said his party is unequivocal about the bill.
