, L2 b- N' }9 j. oAs a result, immigration and controversial laws around citizenship are coming up a bit more often on the doors, say candidates.
7 N, }# W* ^" NConservative candidate Tim Uppal said his party has an excellent record on welcoming newcomers.

' Y9 {" L/ X0 ^6 \“Under this government, we have had the highest levels of sustained immigration in Canadian history,” he said.3 H6 i& a$ q2 _ w4 E! P) A8 V8 }! M
1 M8 Y$ I4 ?: P+ T0 Y7 c2 b; ]: tUppal also defends bill C-24, legislation that allows the government to strip citizenship from dual citizens convicted of terrorism or treason. He said when someone has been convicted and served their time of a charge as serious as terrorism it’s common sense to deport them.% a2 `9 h* x5 \. e
“If we can have their citizenship stripped, because they’re a dual citizen, than I would rather not have them in this country,” he said.

/ V: B8 N7 h% G4 O4 o% w% rLiberal candidate Amarjeet Sohi said the Conservative bill is discriminatory, treating Canadians with dual citizenship as unequal.

“If you deport a terrorist to another country, where there may not be any rule of law, where they can create havoc in that country, how does that make the world a safe place?”

He said his party is unequivocal about the bill.
