谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语; u  F& F: z% S: {) I: Q( A; G
" @( t& O5 ?$ m' P

$ X  P$ \3 g- {# P, |/ _' v% H在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯
: b6 |1 K& V$ w  j之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。/ i0 {" R: ~6 E7 ^& M3 b
若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!! b8 i2 e! X# w% S, ]

) N; }# @0 O( {& I' f  P' x(1) empty suit:5 O' X, q( q% S8 S; p
指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。- _& d1 y  ]6 H3 U, K0 s$ [
(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。)
1 `- |, @, T" v7 E, M2 h例如:
, v+ s* J2 s  w/ T$ f6 zAn empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.
: O7 n& `! V+ a(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。)! [0 ^0 n' G2 y8 @& E7 v
Mr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.
! U6 u5 f; `7 T: d; n(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)# k5 T3 j  k: C* _
虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:
* h% r) C) V; |6 @# bThe company is filled with a lot of empty suits.
& g; {6 y4 }- H7 F6 W# B2 E(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)
1 B3 s+ T2 Q# u  X(2) fair-haired boy:
0 i/ S1 S, X4 ]1 M6 ?- x& f指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man)
4 h7 Y+ v' ?# Y! Z(通常用单数,当名词用); r$ |1 g8 l' \! ^
例如:4 r7 ?$ t% g7 M3 u7 h
Mr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.
( F" X( j' V1 p* l2 {( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)
+ w3 b/ T* T# B' WNot being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.# Z7 ]. g8 D# R. j$ X) m
(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。)
4 m: m" \3 e( y; c" W9 d3 y' p. @! [有时也可用复数:# ^* _4 E/ m& |7 Y8 X
Mr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.. L1 u) r6 s) Y0 y# q3 }2 k3 ~% X* b
(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。)
( W! q7 B+ O/ R1 G0 f0 g# Z  WFair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.
* g. j, o: h4 J$ _9 Y/ D& I! L, P7 ?0 a0 S2 ](得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。): N, C; u0 {8 W- a
(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法)
4 g" q3 e' r, N3 A  ^(3) fishing expedition:9 f* k# S) Q& I# m
为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)
$ N% |0 E! G* i(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)
. w2 w0 P" p( G例如:
7 N5 J, X! d$ t, W7 |The judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.* n% S- A2 H0 N5 W0 `$ ^
(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。). \  S$ b" H9 ?. r+ O1 _  N
The police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case.
: M- g5 }  R: H(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)' o0 @0 g& J' z7 \( y
(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict)2 H" H% E7 k% V2 ^2 X
The reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.2 h# I* ~& f" o; X9 \7 T
(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)
. V2 A' P2 e* H  R偶尔也有人用复数:0 Q; ^+ R+ |! P. d/ |6 g0 q, a* _
Several fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office.7 [3 K: m* `+ ]6 J# @
(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)
4 M4 E4 x# c/ b/ J& R& A(4) filthy rich:" z4 c; g2 W; ]5 r
意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy)
+ \% v: Q, J0 N( h(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱)
9 e! y- d7 B: u) d: M7 [* a8 @8 h# |  _多半当形容词用。例如:
& p/ u+ t6 T' k) ^With a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.
* [, d- E+ ?4 k, p6 Q0 @5 Z( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。)( P: K: q, i+ }( j6 f( |! ^
Despite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way./ e0 z. I) ^* J" d% l
(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。)
/ Z$ W) _% n; q" A3 ]A filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.) o0 A* Y/ g) Z9 [2 c3 ]
(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)! I: c" ]/ M4 M* }4 M1 X
Filthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.6 s1 x; x3 X% l" i" u: c- o' ~% p
(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。)# @3 ]' q! Z  u) Z8 c8 _4 v# H
(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法)4 a$ M  L+ G' A1 x% b9 }
(5) fairy godmother:
: J4 n+ A" f6 D5 p0 ?" M指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance)
$ w, R) c& f  K(多半指有钱的女人)+ h& a; S7 ?: M
(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:* y" \  w- |" o3 s4 u" B
Mr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.
' D" G+ I5 ]! o' B2 A1 N' F" x0 K(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)
& @) e9 g* d  F+ }; UAfter lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.
7 K: o- \; d, b(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。)5 F1 O% \) o2 s4 P, T9 j' U
有时也用复数:
9 N7 ]* h7 u1 v) P( z. `Only business women can act as fairy godmothers.6 k3 d# O' g. R  g; g3 Y8 g
(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)6 u! M5 a+ d: J& n
In Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered.& I  Q: b0 y9 |! D( u7 g, k6 T' e
(在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。)2 p! a  {0 Z" `- h  Y# Q* ?. g

4 H, N- `3 y1 H% c% u1 z$ O6 O  z% H3 Y, a/ E5 G' I5 ]
6)eye opener:# y2 _% p1 s$ q/ T. p- ?( |' p
指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion)- M! u6 W, c5 i& J
(当名词用;通常只用单数)
) ?* `# a' K' T) Q例如:
, g( B2 M& Q/ i0 q1 b1 aYour wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.) }9 J9 w% M. c  |! r
(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)$ e& e6 [2 Y+ ~  E! s
Mr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.
+ E0 b2 R" L' A: s. Y$ y(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)& z) ]2 L4 V0 O  L3 ?7 M
The popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.7 R+ @3 r7 {- ~& t
(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。)
* ~) ?% w9 F0 v) e' O, ]8 E' xSome American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people.9 |8 t7 D7 u8 w
(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。)# P& X6 D4 q0 [% Y/ a  x# U
(7) hot dog:; C0 A2 R' v4 ~# L. g1 G
指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)) R. P' F5 C' @- [8 D
例如:; Q$ }6 p3 _$ w6 \& ~: _8 V
Some young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time." J  @- V( v" K
(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。)) f; L7 e  H/ f* I7 a9 A. d+ Q+ R
(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)) P4 g0 H1 h5 `8 O& Q
In front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.
2 m: j+ x; M/ W  V" u* N5 T(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。)
; q& A* P8 @* r/ C% p1 Q(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging)3 f4 c6 W3 X: l: y4 Q
During the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.
9 x& Q4 @7 q# m(在空军表演时,一位飞行员做惊险的飞行动作。)( }2 F7 }% V/ Q/ q* w5 J* z
也指真正的热狗食物:4 \* d0 t1 b& A$ b% E
The hot dog is one of the favorite fast food in the U.S.9 P, D5 g  O" e! ~! a; Q8 w
(在美国热狗是一种受欢迎的快餐。)
) k+ o8 A6 q$ g- u% e也可表达欣赏的心情:

(8)eager beaver:
2 r. R  T- a! [" t# @指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others)% }# ?6 a" I8 y
(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)
% P; H- L6 [9 |/ l% W3 P(当名词用,可指男女)
) i. v5 K$ c1 _" i例如:
3 V% x) C! F+ {# r8 K. M# L! w) J+ o6 lJohn seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.
4 J; E/ \' e- Z' v(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)
0 w$ H' f8 N4 c1 V/ nBeing an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.
; @& i7 G6 N8 Q% E3 l& ?(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。)0 i7 ^. n: G! _
Does Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?$ c$ t/ V) Y7 F3 P1 H2 Y3 a
(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?)
% T# U( K7 [* E8 {You may find some eager beavers in any organizations.
5 j. \1 g, X6 H" I(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。): J) K# j* j/ j8 @
(9)doubting Thomas:
( Z+ @: b- W; e* f. h这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)
+ h6 l1 |0 f! U- B" i" F  Y(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活)
& ~& i5 ?4 |: u1 m3 q/ B(当名词用)( L) A- Q" M! J5 M9 E  f
例如:
  h& i: h- Q9 }8 mI am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.2 e6 ~7 _1 u0 t6 x5 X
(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。), ~  Q' }0 w! o: x7 o# a1 L
There must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.
& \7 X& ?1 u9 B! n- d% b8 K(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。)
+ a& ^9 I& i% O8 ]也可用复数:$ {' S% Q/ g$ h* I6 S( P/ i
My friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.; v4 D5 t2 e9 G$ [  S, V3 t
(我朋友对许多中国商人不信任。)
- ^/ L( J; r% d* W1 K- ZIf there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another.# D! w7 ^% V) |% _2 o9 i- V
(假如社会上有太多的怀疑主义者,那么人与人之间的信心就会丧失。)
' x1 _: m- @4 S(10)dragon lady:
# M& }5 l7 {# ~6 W指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)9 }4 P- m9 e& m6 C
例如:( D7 U& }3 ~; j$ P' u
The chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.
  d5 O' U, ^7 d(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)6 H$ f! `' d7 U
I am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady., ]. l1 h4 F0 d/ G0 M) w; C2 `
(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。)$ Q" n5 h0 q7 E* ?) X; B
Should your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?
' U4 N7 P! K8 z: _+ M6 ?(假如你的女友成了凶恶的女人,你要与她分手吗?)
0 d7 Y9 u  c  P( J, A也可用复数:* k+ K) ], a3 K
There may be many dragon ladies in our community.
: O, @% Z  E9 }3 E; ~(在我们社区里也许有不少凶女人。)
5 Z4 l5 k% y/ \, ?6 e注:老外指凶恶男人,不用 dragon gentleman,利用英国侦探小说里的中国恶棍傅满洲(Fu Manchu)为代表
