concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
# Q. o$ s3 _- `5 E) E8 e) m7 s5 {attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
0 T3 N* l) r! p! v4 I2 N5 Rwill acquire language earlier and faster.6 g; L3 E# s" X9 D5 G' y8 o. ]! G
) Q8 f2 ^% [ R& WIn order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately& ]) C( v3 P; R* R
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop1 g! p- ^* U+ T, P$ J5 W
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
$ l1 H. m1 q9 K/ Q. @' e! osimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you
& m7 v. n. ?9 N3 cmay say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your: Y9 K& U2 E; m: V# A
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
; z1 j( ~" g. S% f& u, p& R
. A' n$ T* w- P2 kAt 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
* V: y4 G8 h$ D7 \/ m- rbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and9 V& E' u* T1 s, O
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.

Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
8 D: ]; e# J& T9 Dproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
8 U" ?1 g, K8 i7 E( ?. X1 N) |knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to1 ]' `, N( ~$ ~( A$ w
those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

5 m9 R h6 [, z9 b) A7 `Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,
8 y, h; q* D5 S" v4 k% _. ithe child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.! E2 `- C9 P& f7 c
9 ]# b0 N( R8 _9 t4 qThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done8 N$ Z; r) P% W2 ]0 u
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she" j% d0 Y& o3 v; [+ X& Y
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will5 P; l O* D9 M8 Z4 ?, b
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data% j& a$ }6 f% i8 j: q, k0 y
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show% o' r) c! e5 f! t7 V. {3 D
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
: P1 t$ d& L$ j' ?; a% qin the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and0 k. c, }, o8 V; F, p6 P- e
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations," a* q9 e1 x1 S* T, @6 `/ S
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of2 e- V: g" B `
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
