Dear Parent or Guardian,
0 X' v4 e5 Z( w, SI am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I- G$ [# A* R' `, P8 Z1 q
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,' Y: c6 v( E; J) Z" A
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and
9 J6 Y5 }/ M8 _6 {6 wattachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
" Y2 C s( H( b" F- P( wwill acquire language earlier and faster.
N+ J: J- k; V6 D. D1 U u4 N* H" f- A# r t M
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately( u/ n6 V9 {5 e8 N
30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop6 |5 ]8 w- B7 J
videotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
3 g2 ^7 {, L- a8 y! ~5 j( a. ^8 usimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you) }: Z& D% X, k+ k6 v& K
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your \0 {( B. y1 R( O5 J0 E+ T. ^
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
9 @* n) ~: `+ @& b5 i8 `* e# T6 b5 T% l5 |% k% ]. X
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common2 Z7 r' h0 N m
behaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and
1 ~0 q) N# z( sthose that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.
4 D& v! Q% p% W" p5 }6 l- q w# c* C3 D. h0 O' q
Starting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
K3 t2 A8 S( n$ g% hproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby
; q# ?! O+ x( ~! vknows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
# P. M2 k9 h; e, I" u$ B2 @4 m- Sthose behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.

Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,( B* ~' o- t8 K" g
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.

8 T. d* |0 O0 S' D) }0 Y) eThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done+ O" g) n# ~: A/ t3 _% p, o0 B% J
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she7 E, Y. `( ^5 e. m. w& @# B7 D
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will( C; F+ d( ^4 ^3 [5 ?+ N
take about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate
; N9 m1 g! X: S# qon the next page. If we contact you later on, you may always decide that you no longer wish to participate.
" n# ]2 p4 e$ }5 e7 m; T1 T/ RAs a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data' u0 @6 o2 I& z1 C8 @5 n( l
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show& n# X0 Y! {1 |# f& q& x
video clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used
3 ]! ]7 C- e* {in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and* K, [9 s) T) n; Q& J: F4 C0 q7 y
destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,3 K- w% V0 d0 m5 |1 Q
and teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of; @9 x3 y/ R W K" T
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific
8 C. ^3 D2 M; S6 ~journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child: @/ g2 @$ _9 J3 j
