Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall! w) K7 r3 X7 v7 L" ?3 j
not do any of the following:
4 |/ p6 [& {# x3 f' |/ _6 J(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor2 N. ^* t: O# _* K% s [
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
! i7 a! C# P! ?9 M+ w, _(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor! ?8 }: u L* N: P3 z! d& Y
vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
! N" O: Z& I' B: d$ Z9 x( O$ M(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
' ]% y# A6 v1 x5 Gpermit another person$ C ~' w$ T7 w9 |( Y
(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or
# z1 v2 d2 w* ]' O) V" E7 u(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
0 U) Q7 ?- b# A- U" Wunless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;. s' T, W1 b5 k4 ?' C
(d) give or lend a financial( M. u+ `+ o' I+ I$ _7 a5 \
responsibility card or a copy of it
" z! U/ _* e6 X4 `! P: S7 Yto a person not entitled to have that financial
8 j# R+ a& I+ F* V% u1 ?responsibility card or copy.
) o1 ^7 S4 D- m o, |! F" R1 M2 f(1.1)- P1 Z* w! o! j4 D: p( k. ^! c
If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
# V) B6 ^3 @" `" q( r8 |0 ?' s8 |- cwithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
6 d( `* |2 h2 U$ c; kthe vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection8 l; F: u F9 Y3 i7 \ [9 R
(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is
9 C5 W' X3 Y; {! }! |9 M2 T2 P3 m3 nnot an insured motor vehicle.

If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
' X6 O5 {$ f7 p$ _1 i7 L7 c, Y) OAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this7 L2 x& k$ q& @6 r; Z0 E; J4 y2 K

3 E2 G/ N/ r( lSubsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a7 y, J+ _9 o z- U, w- P4 H
financial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
m( i7 z: W5 _3 J: G# UInsurance Act' X) o1 B& F* z, L$ |! T
by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
; X$ {/ A: X |* F( _outside Alberta.
6 X! A8 h: Y$ w( T. ~(4)
4 Y2 m- E" @4 d# @( \; t7 gA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection. \4 K/ J9 C, ]3 K& [
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,' E% b" K* ^/ h/ W+ R# v$ f
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $25008 ^+ P2 n+ @# p0 \
and not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to8 u6 {+ t0 X5 [- d3 f1 |
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
% s8 k8 w4 z, x4 B1 w, cmore than 6 months
' h- @, r# A. L/ @2 D- S) @Minimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
