5 U- N, [9 a7 k, C, Z& FThe Edmonton Police Service is warning the public about an on-going computer scam known as ransomware.

6 O8 f/ e- I6 {! f2 _Ransomware is essentially a threat to your computer unless you pay an external company.

3 ]$ Q; R- v* P0 g; gSeveral reports have been received by the EPS where computer users are claiming they are receiving pop-up messages asking for immediate payment otherwise they would be “locked out” of their computers. # V4 W1 H0 D+ r) N" S' r7 ?

It has been reported that these pop-up warning messages are claiming to come from a Canadian police or government agency. The message tells computer users to pay $100 via Ukash (a payment service provider) so that their computers can be “unlocked.”

+ F4 @6 p- B- F: n" `: R [“Often these pop-up messages appear after a user attempts to download something off the internet,” says Staff Sgt. Dan Service with Economic Crimes Section. “The download activates “malware” or a type of virus which creates a pop-up message asking for payment.” 2 g+ k6 }8 O: d* K

Ransomware scams are designed to create shock and anxiety so computer users respond by sending money quickly to prevent being locked out of their computer. : o3 h4 m: ]0 z1 Z, }7 `8 J

If you receive one of these messages, please be aware that: 8 r A% U& N" ]. p. b

•the ransomware is an attempt to defraud you.
2 L' H3 B' w% u5 Y1 q5 L% g) g•sending money will not fix your computer – it will remain locked. DO NOT SEND MONEY.
4 s9 m5 b& B6 b) j7 m•neither police nor any Canadian government agency would hijack computers in order to obtain money. 2 r7 F' {9 `9 X r, H% s8 l8 N
•the ransomware is hard evidence that your computer has been infected by malicious software (malware) that must be dealt with. ) P) o; c9 G; C+ t+ N5 E# C
The recommended way to re-gain access to your computer is to seek the help of a computer technician who can remove the malware. A' |; q9 Q/ S6 g- r, X' k
4 T0 V: c& \4 X) iTo protect against cyber attacks, it is recommended to update your software regularly. You should have up-to-date anti-virus, spyware and firewall protection. " T4 b0 T, L$ L5 v3 f+ \
