One day, when I was a freshman in high school,2 h5 P4 J1 g. P: @' j7 H

I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.

His name was Kyle.2 g: J% _6 s3 |8 @7 f& C
( c- J( k. J# N/ o3 M4 p5 U' QIt looked like he was carrying all of his

$ M5 f& x$ @. I: ?1 s( t9 H+ s8 S/ B3 r
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?5 F: a. Y. s; G0 Z/ v7 F. K
5 A* P- ?( [4 `' x! j) s
He must really be a nerd."
& S8 t, _1 Z1 U2 l0 ~# c& B1 e) ~2 B$ I# a9 X; s) W
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.1 L% |$ a( j! D& W! t
' p( a- G" S3 Q, L! j+ B. ^As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
( [& @" i9 j ]) b2 X$ O
5 A) N6 D& r2 h( \3 bThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
+ X1 i* Q) N3 h, X
3 S. ^& a% y5 B8 PHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.5 ?: c0 k4 K9 f- D) E( U
z5 J7 o/ J- ]7 s uHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes4 N" I0 D+ D' w* a
# w$ C. \% D4 {. ?2 pMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.2 ?- U0 a# Z+ y( J+ _+ S: n9 W, n
S4 [$ [( |$ q) X3 AAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
' N e% U3 ~ [- u
" i$ J6 H; Y# e( x, y/ n9 yThey really should get lives.

" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"' p7 X* i. _0 L% U( ]' Z
9 ?% q' }& ~: L2 W' Q9 `6 z/ y# Y8 AThere was a big smile on his face.

It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.

5 P U1 h# F& zI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.

i3 L4 t% K1 hAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.

He said he had gone to private school before now.; Q5 l& T; l) ]

I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.' F' I/ A$ @5 N' r7 \

We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.

He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.3 K7 J% c C5 ^5 P

I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.; I! Z$ O; B. E! n& V

He said yes.

& v1 r/ m; j1 f+ ~6 G; jWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.

Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.) S. C8 ^3 @& f9 m9 V
$ I; |$ {: O* S& o$ bI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday! S8 M) E; H: n0 A; Z
1 Q8 Z1 {; ~/ V0 Z! t2 N3 g. I) @& w" He just laughed and handed me half the books.5 N6 V0 A4 ], p% d( L. `+ u2 |
* e! B9 m4 {8 ?+ VOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.

When we were seniors, we began to think6 S3 a7 ~3 I. A+ g* r
About college.7 Y! a, [% V; i2 m8 g9 h- n
6 ?3 I$ ^0 s& l# I ~Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I

" ^! J8 ~8 \7 R; NI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.

He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship." x5 L' W6 Z: v _8 {1 q+ o

Kyle was valedictorian of our class.

4 M) M* Z9 H; WI teased him all the time about being a nerd.

% J. w1 Y' w: KHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.

I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak

Graduation day, I saw Kyle.9 {, C. y( e% E3 F O: W( t+ |& e
( Q. Z- Q6 S; U5 W4 o) DHe looked great.

He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.' v$ p# o0 |, u" Z& n I" N
2 N% d" ~+ f: R2 PHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.

He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.

So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"

He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.

9 [+ D" G5 v2 z! T" QAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began$ H e) w* p' j7 h9 ^
( ^: [) O2 \* e) s"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.! |; z& f! L( @9 k% X. m: S
( h% p% w* n% y. s) b5 v: _Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...5 }1 f0 f" {7 y9 R

Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.

2 X6 a" j. q$ k4 II just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.

: d0 |) A3 x$ cHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.' e( O, P. Z* b- q' ^8 z. H# U$ L

"Thankfully, I was saved.$ A0 w2 ~3 R' b7 `
. x4 t, O, K: d& e" AMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."2 U& O9 r3 a3 m2 ?8 s0 P9 y( C
% p- b& c) ~* s }8 ]I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.

I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.. G: O' u' X7 a2 g; F4 e. R" i6 G
' [4 C7 K: J1 XNot until that moment did I realize it's depth.* T4 J9 C* D2 ? w% i; p6 f% I
3 ?9 k: S9 N/ ENever underestimate the power of your actions.: C2 A: \* K) h: Y; I" H
t- P+ v1 o% _' R/ q9 KWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.

For better or for worse.

God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.2 p9 H" N2 D9 L0 q' Z

Look for God in others.
