You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
, C( x2 H# \* d' u! M' j" C0 W$ Q7 N; b( [- i' _- B, _
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.4 E1 e& K6 ~6 q6 S* X: [8 d- |5 r

. c* z4 w; @  e3 t  t. g4 nHis name was Kyle.
9 F/ y( w/ C& V6 r
+ R3 K6 j- j" `- Z" w2 u/ vIt looked like he was carrying all of his
; L$ M0 u( c/ H' q! ^* h$ T+ zBooks.
* z, e/ X8 E0 N" m# \; }9 x. B! v; T+ D/ K8 \" i) u/ e
I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?1 [8 `7 Q! f  {6 Q1 Z
8 T1 N: V6 T9 R
He must really be a nerd."7 a' ^$ J$ N5 e$ S% ]3 `
' W0 e& W7 u5 |
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
0 g% Y, `# S2 {. Y
# C! H8 a* @2 \7 a( ~+ y& QAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.  s5 D4 D8 F& o: N* K9 c/ w

! V5 A0 c) |7 e( ?- g' XThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.& E0 a/ @6 E% o% a7 i$ M; z

2 \: I* v7 C) V# a8 v' mHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
' L: N' A) A# n. t4 Y- t/ s" N+ A: y$ h9 W7 I; x, r2 o9 S
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
' m+ I; g/ N8 n7 L9 f+ D) v1 T# u( w" B' n7 W' r8 @: h
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye." p" b; X5 |- ]+ g& U

+ w" i. y  v7 s) w! eAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.* k% K+ n' K( J, L- ~9 V4 J( X
6 [$ c9 Q0 T, ~
They really should get lives.0 G) f+ f/ ~. X8 W' m( g

+ I: ~4 R. H4 T4 ^& ]3 e" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"

! x( C. ?. X8 D+ X0 P' aThere was a big smile on his face.& w" f" V! f$ E* O5 x4 x3 ~- s
5 G$ W  G) F; ^9 |; z! O( n
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.2 I  ?7 q1 T% l5 X# f

  s6 j* v3 J& v# y8 XI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
+ [: Z9 U  _/ A& Y- F+ s1 x$ |& B2 ~
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.; }: @5 N) Z3 ^0 o; [
7 B+ p( W& m. e8 p, m) g6 X
He said he had gone to private school before now.
' a0 W7 m% C% b( w9 {, N$ r' W/ v4 ?! Q/ @: \( u8 Y
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.& \( I# c& |# j" l! m8 I. P
- `) P8 ~( B( [9 L/ L
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.7 U) z! i; c/ U1 ?5 M: r
; ^7 a8 @# ?3 E
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.4 G8 N3 e4 d% `- Z' ?. w

; W  `1 i" e9 [/ \5 FI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
! n" {7 `* m- K; u" ?
& n+ ]( V# y" {& E: sHe said yes.
: b4 @* Q/ ]( s- U0 i" Y3 q; k, T. |6 z. E
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.& ~& R. A7 U' S& o- O: V

- t0 c4 i# c4 r' @" M, R) M: wMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
$ C% t2 M( ?8 u( T% W# P1 m& Q7 l7 a! k! c: N' l9 o
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
% v; R  q4 s* U, ]
, d$ w: \4 F+ D2 p5 g" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
7 l% G5 i( r4 ?7 g$ ?1 j
/ B- A9 b" r* G5 f: tOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.& W. V4 X# `+ n- }+ N$ t" H4 g% Q5 |

3 B. h: y- i' {  F% T, S7 ~When we were seniors, we began to think0 z) s2 i1 D: U( n1 i. @% ]! @$ h
About college.' Y- E- g: |' t" i; F
9 T$ d- X" K# B/ `( J0 t; {
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I* |- Y  n: R, Z* j% W0 p
Was going to Duke.
# R' a( w8 f. U$ T9 M7 k8 `
# Q  `" g  \+ L( S. _2 ]I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.0 ]* h! T( Q" X2 R' k

0 h, O. z4 ?* }3 P9 gHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
$ \: Y, w1 ]: L
7 E3 }6 ?  P! }2 f. N  o+ C3 rKyle was valedictorian of our class.
5 h3 P% Q3 U. K8 I& [; }9 U" w. Q2 c0 ^% x( G+ e1 C7 ~$ X
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.3 C5 p) t, \5 A8 y- g7 h( B* y

% }0 O6 U8 k5 z* q  V) F7 c/ \He had to prepare a speech for graduation.
0 f8 r; u1 }- |; X. J& Q. K0 j6 _+ [  \' {9 m
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
5 n- Z' F! m+ R* }( _, X& \5 ], k# w
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.1 v+ g9 ]5 [1 }( W7 E
# [  y/ p" w+ U  H( p. y1 D' M8 w
He looked great.) T* v/ ^' H8 c
7 o; \; C! d! o
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
/ z3 }9 A$ Y( @' f
& z+ ^0 ?) @6 |He filled out and actually looked good in glasses." j# L3 ]( n9 p1 I
' t) X- ^  n* [7 |/ v; n' Q* ^
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
' L+ `/ \, }) l% m% l# V+ u) S/ h% r/ s. X
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.1 M, c( U  S/ E8 Q( V* c

/ m; D1 H9 H- b: TToday was one of those days.. N5 ~' a* l7 ]3 r4 r

( r4 P  O. X1 M2 ~: {' l. oI could see that he was nervous about his speech." l9 o/ |9 M- s) C1 V; _$ }- v4 O. j- M1 p
4 F0 `) l) ^- |* q
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"& g6 _  ?/ X! `
5 c7 O2 Q: r& }7 ~. }" c  K
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
) c; ^# t  f, ]* R' g6 X
, x5 g3 k8 \) E9 ^" Y4 l4 ^/ M"Thanks," he said.
# A/ X4 e- ~: g+ N8 g
* F4 i/ e6 E- A# O6 AAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began* m# O0 y7 A, A
$ o2 U# `! W1 u' N1 I
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
1 r6 X5 \) w" f
' X- C5 T; S! P6 E7 E) [/ G2 xYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...: _9 V3 G+ S  ?1 \& z: N+ G
" K4 K: \' j4 k) A
I am here to tell all of you that being a
% k7 a( ~, I  _) s6 }; a3 {Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.8 S8 j  z! K" l, p, F
- b3 n& N( m& G, q
I am going to tell you a story."- E9 J& s- d' j) r, K
; s/ [- Z- i$ g1 o! u
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.* o% V0 P5 G" W% w" {& o; t

! w3 |5 A3 u0 _" l0 pHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.  N- M. H6 Q! c8 ?( i' h5 K
# y3 z8 s( G, \7 {; m! I' v9 I3 ^" k
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.( H- S  [7 n' J1 L

" P7 t4 t* h2 b8 I4 hHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
1 E0 P: I7 ~  f  ^# |  w
- c. ?. s, W' w1 _4 Q: ]"Thankfully, I was saved.
+ {- Z5 y& M" e8 E: Z: C: A. l/ ^1 B, u, O$ q% s. s9 V
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."( x6 p8 {* b/ h' Y
) ], |) ]/ {+ O& g
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.  A' j* U- U5 W$ A5 B
- k) `9 f' ^# ?# n/ ~* u% f! |
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile./ R" N/ [- w7 {3 c* G; F
4 n$ n& `, u/ O. G( ^
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.) d. i7 M/ G/ [: ~

$ w7 N8 }9 k% a5 M3 K4 oNever underestimate the power of your actions.8 _5 H8 _& Y( U5 o, }; g

! m$ C* B) c1 S4 P7 MWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.9 c, g8 Q6 m& w9 {

! R+ D/ ~# P  G5 h3 [For better or for worse.
+ Q$ L7 z) R: y+ z. p! V% L9 H" r; r5 T8 m1 b4 T' M9 z8 d
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.9 l3 ?, o5 o) ^* O$ p' x& f0 P* f2 Z
) k: C4 P. g$ [/ w
Look for God in others.
) B8 Z. Y/ B- t
4 {" g: J, B- z) F  f, R! l3 QYou now have two choices, you can:
4 L4 o4 D: S3 x
: E( l, c6 @8 t, _1) Pass this on to your friends or
; R" b) a0 D8 j. h% s$ Y4 o/ p$ U/ r4 A
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.: |6 d+ J" Z3 p/ T& L

8 Z* l% T$ T+ w  D+ o: @# R  BAs you can see, I took choice number 1.
$ i0 w7 M' H+ z$ G# p* Q, q8 Y* B"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
( q% P$ p# q- O' t: n* d! q5 h# r
4 d1 F4 a) W' V- U) JThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.6 d4 ?/ `, z5 P8 `4 v& k6 R0 }7 g) D
5 }9 o/ j) v$ c% F  c) q
Tomorrow is mystery.

Today is a gift.
