You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
" R6 M. l. ^) X. D# c8 n- B. D+ {1 d
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
9 g2 d5 m' X0 d; b7 m8 @& s# `# |+ D9 x& i
His name was Kyle.& U$ x% |! m- B0 K

4 y3 u9 u: y, ^1 l& @+ IIt looked like he was carrying all of his
4 i% t0 c- d( |. ^7 zBooks.# n/ H! k0 j+ r* j/ B

6 k4 }! x# x& ^3 n% }& t1 OI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
4 @" g# N$ b; k+ a; n
5 ?5 G! n2 K7 U. QHe must really be a nerd."
3 m9 o3 C3 r: y- s; f# N
1 D$ m- Y& R( j% \% O' A# q; ~I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on." [+ [4 c0 I& q: A

' {" n( w( q1 K: a9 XAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
2 {; k: [/ _' C4 Q8 |, S# _8 O, u2 e2 n( x1 @  G' ]- `0 \
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.1 v9 i# C/ p- x1 a- o0 @

: z9 D8 Q! L; {. CHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
  j7 |+ t. X" T% M$ N5 y# w5 Y* E" N
6 S3 C' R7 m0 z7 U/ U; X6 gHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes& ^5 ~5 Q6 ~+ i& O. ^( ^8 R5 d2 ]
; V! W$ [3 l0 x: @% [2 T# V% l
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.; v5 L. B7 M! [+ n: s8 ?5 G$ }  Q

: U. w; \& T. A9 cAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
9 C$ [5 @7 h4 a7 Z# P3 D- T8 O5 E- ^, E* Z8 K; w5 ]5 l, T
They really should get lives.$ m' [+ Y# w1 X4 @2 _
* n" {: p$ |8 z! K
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"& `0 \) n( U, e) Z1 _  l" O& _! G

2 @( F. H( Q- `' `% O5 qThere was a big smile on his face.) y8 ^3 K3 n: R) {% H& H
2 T$ j: V0 i+ F1 p' F
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.3 G! p( H9 F; a$ {, a

, K1 {; ~7 W+ A/ Y' AI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived./ `) e! O& c5 s2 t

' @1 j# o' T% S1 D2 A/ SAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.: w/ J$ C: ~' E$ |
6 L& r$ V- F3 O, }! H) N5 y8 ?0 e
He said he had gone to private school before now.
' E$ \; t5 K4 O. k5 a
7 z3 j+ f' B' w* v% v$ X0 lI would have never hung out with a private school kid before./ S/ K% m; n, n

7 J) z$ F8 q9 bWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.$ |! ]+ y' L: q; _3 U
- S2 h7 }0 r6 N5 y" o3 G. T- i
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
" s' ~4 [4 x* `  }) o6 m% P0 N0 [9 M( _2 W
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends., ^8 O/ b; y& x/ J# b; ]5 a! E9 k
2 r( t) k1 S2 Q, a8 @
He said yes.+ [$ k( I: N* x: [# V" Z

0 s- H' e7 M7 bWe hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.! ?/ I7 V: ^/ J. a' K, J- T: W1 w

% j% _" ^8 Y4 T1 p0 i& |Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again., p7 `/ _1 {, m4 }2 B, m
% [  m) Z8 j3 `! w# F/ o9 m# e* I. F
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!) s% `- E9 g* V* g9 h4 a$ I  P, d# `5 z
& m/ e- ^1 d' r! k4 L" Y* }) M
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.+ u8 |5 x+ {9 [) N

5 q9 X- O' v) E1 o/ \$ V$ {Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
5 d6 i0 M% B) S1 ?! `9 _4 h
  b/ J, n3 i, i# J( V$ W6 Y' BWhen we were seniors, we began to think. L: L8 w% J: M6 a0 `6 F, I6 I
About college." [5 w4 C: @7 T1 n- }1 A
# `( T& a1 m" K8 T- `+ l* i
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I# Z4 h9 l6 Q2 Y$ x
Was going to Duke.7 G- v, l, A' t
, x1 y3 e! o  H4 U- N, w
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.2 k. ?+ E. s9 M1 C
) J; k8 {/ @, }9 w2 B6 I- {/ |
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.# J( ?( H  O' b& s+ o7 `) N- e9 N% j

5 q7 C% G1 k0 F2 I7 Q! U. q8 }Kyle was valedictorian of our class.
& T# o9 e5 W/ p  o. a3 G' O4 G4 Y* y* a9 Q9 @7 B
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.
! F- {* N/ T: E/ z% U$ }8 ]" @0 ]6 C; b5 U, Z2 S
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.
1 Q$ f7 p8 E4 C/ W. h
: u/ f1 P7 h  C- c% iI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
; x8 t" k. k8 A1 z1 V: W; i* f2 O
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.
3 ^$ J3 u" K2 n, o* s% r) w2 [- r! O7 R: [" X4 i
He looked great.' D& C6 b# r% e7 ]4 \$ B

8 _' o# m3 q$ w8 q1 x9 CHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
  d* F" ~$ I& |6 d
$ U* C9 R) h0 l2 a5 mHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
# t2 R; S" e7 D4 E
/ P3 K+ s0 f  z5 h3 h! C' KHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
& [5 w: R! K' O$ a/ @$ W
( }9 U7 S4 q) S8 c6 R: U( ^Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
5 u" i1 b2 H# x! G' }9 Z
: K( J4 A1 @: c" {/ Q& {Today was one of those days.
* [, R9 U1 r1 a, J5 y  J6 }: T
. V# o- g1 r7 V: g- ~; a8 TI could see that he was nervous about his speech.% F0 S2 R, a% L/ U" r: N

% Z+ D( @0 E1 hSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"" d) u1 T/ p; q( F. }4 P
% O" Y9 b; \' d' B
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.1 K* Q7 Z' S/ z  G4 O) }9 u8 l
. F+ X8 X8 N1 B7 z0 L& s6 B' s
"Thanks," he said.
( l! }7 F5 W( u1 k$ A  }( }# |" y8 K
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began! n7 u9 p5 q% l3 B

" n; ?; y) r- i: a"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
/ c9 v. d1 O# J1 w% n6 d/ T! h% Z0 ~1 w6 f' U. g# x
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
8 S, C4 O& ^# F) L" Q7 p$ e( g  O" \; ?/ ^) L7 \
I am here to tell all of you that being a
0 D  x# \; G$ U- n- u' I/ N( Q' OFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.5 q& k) i2 q' V' ~4 h
, \5 ]  g- y7 K; q9 D* }7 t. Y/ L
I am going to tell you a story.". X1 }) A) }- x8 @

2 I- _" w9 |) wI just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
0 u( n# O6 u9 h3 ~5 j
' U0 e) s+ Q$ LHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
+ T( ?1 z& u% ^2 U4 P4 l. N/ D
. `& c$ `6 Q9 k& {6 A* [& D7 `He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.3 x. O1 @: u. ]" ?7 @8 g

1 q: ?8 _* R7 J) n9 _He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.; y' P- |0 @* d( H+ P' w( E

/ I/ G/ Y. |0 r+ z3 e! M  z! t$ Y"Thankfully, I was saved.
3 h/ x0 C/ e" ~- H2 h; W
0 g' u1 K1 l- `My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."8 }" U9 ]4 R3 i% J! z- I+ D

( `* m" l/ N$ n7 o$ hI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
6 p8 q) o( s" [: j# a/ E
1 c  j1 R0 z: g" {# RI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.+ o2 ~- \3 h9 e3 \5 P* X
) n  [5 Q, M3 y( N. Q; P
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.
3 r  c  ]5 P% B4 `# _' `9 i8 Q9 @" z$ d+ w" b
Never underestimate the power of your actions.
: V1 }# _3 X( ]( h6 k
; X! N" y/ [' k( sWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.
3 Y2 F9 ]8 D* h* b" Z( f. J
( d2 e/ ~) q1 o  {. f, L  |7 B6 iFor better or for worse.- c! ?# A, a2 S. D& P7 W
+ h; X1 y' I+ L, R
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
% P1 Q- A4 |% \& O6 g* A1 L: [- R# |. U7 q6 c$ Z
Look for God in others.
; [' q; B0 B, J5 [/ h/ w1 x
' I; @; \3 p$ p' X4 ^You now have two choices, you can:
4 C* v! i' [( h, l- k, I/ ~6 E9 m( p3 m) X2 E1 q3 `4 e
1) Pass this on to your friends or. w$ o6 |+ r" z& l

4 e( H7 l1 f( G6 i1 V2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.  j7 `$ Z; {  a2 j) t4 l  y

- A8 V) v/ a4 b; Y$ E( BAs you can see, I took choice number 1.7 \  e% [! j1 d4 A. `' ~0 r- V
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."

+ s+ {% H5 T  GThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.9 \; D  J  z9 p" K
2 i4 ?% K7 p) m! C' t7 ~1 O
Tomorrow is mystery.$ W8 G, T: |' {% r3 ~
