service providers.

3 m$ `+ D2 x3 @$ c/ z- VOur government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are
- c) ^2 U! L, L4 J# @7 L. l' m& tan increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving2 C# T4 x* K8 |& ]2 I$ m
innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops8 F" a* J3 s1 o- G. B
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look
! N) v" G; ]% K% T. s' h9 ]carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be! l! o2 s/ t( Z$ U) Q: U$ e& H
guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and
8 _1 W$ j# ~ R0 X8 a9 Pinvestment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing
2 d C0 r% L( r, Q$ v. x/ @) mmarket forces to prevail.
. k& L' B/ U3 z7 ^, ~8 |7 h7 B; o" S% p5 Q
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
3 |' ]0 W0 I- ychosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large% k9 I6 c0 z) I! H$ I/ p0 F
number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

$ Y- N# s. M& D- S5 V0 o2 ?When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the
7 o3 c: `& j% _/ |$ igovernment will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in% V6 H4 ^( f6 S6 F* _& T4 w2 E+ f
line with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages2 C \7 B* Q; @( _# u3 z
competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that% ?' d7 N, F1 _
any decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.
