$ f% R! P9 S. r. l- `9 N ~4 pOur government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are
7 H% g# [ ]. J% m9 q2 i5 O. man increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving. `9 N( w2 R, C5 K- G& `) y
innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops) M# b% A# y2 _+ V
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look( h7 R' h9 O+ r7 s) F; c
carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be' s5 I0 b: ]5 T7 N* X. e5 b; I7 J0 }
guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and
- A9 J7 V4 v, C, j: Pinvestment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing1 f, V- ?6 O% Z1 k1 X- k2 v$ O
market forces to prevail. 1 Z$ U7 l. t6 o% e9 v- `
& R0 Q9 `: k0 ?$ h Z! G* mThe Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has% O' U H% R5 I! y' O3 s
chosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large, ]5 M4 E4 g' N$ K Z, X
number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

- q( o" U4 z% c/ u8 LWhen the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the

line with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages, c+ i# @: [' L) v
competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that2 q, ]1 q, c4 {- \8 c6 c
any decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.& C" N$ W K% h, U# w5 {1 O/ Z0 `5 m
