 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned % y" v; d" u1 s. K( k) L
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
. f! P/ O1 `7 M9 j& jin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October Q- F9 g. |) ^4 [
excited about their opportunities. When they saw $ R, N2 Y( C$ G' D9 U) Y
their church, it was very run down and needed 2 V9 u: N: L# A e7 d' i8 w2 |, ^
much work. They set a goal to have everything 3 Z) E9 M9 @6 G" { d
done in time to have their first service
7 t* d. m, d7 f1 {- n) |, y9 e. `7 Kon Christmas Eve. ( R* H! q z: I0 _8 P8 w
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
7 Y2 {& B9 \8 f& H* Gpainting, etc, and on December 18 0 X, Z, s. T% j, ^6 A, R9 W
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. & J* a h1 v7 E
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving , L. b2 N: v0 @6 \! q) P% o5 T
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 1 X& B" g; r! V" W' ^, L
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
" S) |0 ^6 F& g1 e3 K# Y. wHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had
1 p; H- |; N1 h/ m3 @leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
: y3 l) b5 m4 t5 O: `20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
2 w/ ~( V+ F' n5 g x6 ~7 Z" k3 iof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
' U+ c& w B* Xbeginning about head high. 2 g9 j' ]: u; Z/ y* Z
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, 9 Z C$ U3 T) `% e
and not knowing what else to do but postpone
( w! E0 G/ g M( I* _3 c0 u3 Jthe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
& U2 X3 L& T4 f$ jOn the way he noticed that a local business was " P) o" n6 ~- s' L/ ^0 ^% ?; M
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
' x0 ]/ O3 k, G/ D( @& dstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, # `; T1 l% t* v
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
, M* R/ s7 ?8 k4 D( k9 Iwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
- ? c- V$ I! w1 dembroidered right in the center. It was just 8 h( \0 ~+ D+ N# {( h
, D& z. J. b7 e( M# m( S
3 Q3 n& o# c# n3 r @3 x+ W4 g7 T
9 U4 P1 W1 I9 s8 a) E( U! X0 }& d
% E! w; `/ I8 i. S
. s8 b+ G& `! v9 |* y _0 O2 c' d* ~! E
. H9 |* A. \; P* k* H% e& A; j$ Pthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
, M( U8 X" F8 V* G4 s7 u+ gB y this time it had started to snow. An older
6 x! k# z7 | B6 ]1 f6 }3 pwoman running from the opposite direction was
. Y z5 f! W6 [0 Y& ]+ P: a% w4 Etrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 9 E( B2 Q ?; ?6 O" N6 X; T2 G
invited her to wait in the warm church for
6 d# t$ g: B5 {" }. q4 b! ~the next bus 45 minutes later.
( b, A) ]# ~5 J" ]+ f, O+ N* I6 ]$ v
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
$ x; y/ D, Y) ~2 Kwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 0 ~2 m* \2 H0 ?; h" ], P V
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
5 j* \ F/ h3 N3 z4 Z* [could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 6 A* f& x8 X( R) _6 C0 T
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center9 n# F# R/ ] j2 D j( O9 w
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
, w" a& i9 j9 a) oshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" # S7 H; \, }6 }0 @7 W U) g
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check- @' T; q/ E' r1 h# T! x6 g: M
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into4 l7 R7 l* e7 m. w9 q; S
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had 4 p8 W8 U" k5 Y
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
% r3 Y5 L9 u! ~T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor , l; \) |- _, P3 G7 [$ w+ ^- v
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
6 P: o/ i4 C7 n4 swoman explained that before the war she and
+ s* @1 ~5 y, f m! Z' C! N7 Aher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
, _" O) H2 J* b/ d3 A
: t& f) Z# ]4 z8 `0 Z- K# G- aWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
' [7 E- ], X5 Z+ hHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
2 W) s+ _$ s! h6 ^" fHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
) c4 T+ E) [! K7 ?- ^; Ehusband or her home again.
& a+ z0 M( Z" X7 n: ~% @T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;- l/ c2 ?5 f. Y# w! n0 r
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.- G7 j8 H8 O# [! K: J0 v0 j
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
: ]* m$ F% M) u7 M' }$ B" ~was the least he could do. She lived on the other7 B7 |7 T- d6 \- F% \& ^
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn - C2 ?7 s9 M% Z0 `% s! a4 N
for the day for a housecleaning job.; H. m! L( d2 B. B9 M5 Q% U
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
3 a2 w7 |, a2 V1 A" ^" PEve. The church was almost full. The music and the ; t' a* z" l/ w& C0 y/ F
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the - m& B8 A9 L7 s& [# K
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 2 q. }" I0 `" O
and many said that they would return.. % y3 S9 I- |1 k
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
0 ]# V# J q4 Ffrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
1 s0 m& Y0 y9 O- R; H* upews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 0 P' K9 T- {. p, Y( z
wasn't leaving.
" Y. [1 \/ I) U9 b1 }& p& ~$ dThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on " U/ I1 y! S5 F8 b' r3 W
the front wall because it was identical to one
+ q1 b0 A# j0 l" m( ?8 \% g: ~that his wife had made years ago when
+ {& ~6 {. c6 I4 H$ j/ Q2 othey lived in Austria before the war and how
/ X" i/ C+ ?! B+ R- E& jcould there be two tablecloths so much alike?
7 i# `8 ^7 J0 \' F* z1 R D* CH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
0 g1 x( A) a: y. @+ H4 t/ eforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 1 k9 w7 c' t$ K1 E+ Y
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and1 M0 E$ Y. ?) k5 L& d/ h% J
put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home$ R& R% l/ @3 ~
again all the 35 years between.
' R& i& [% ~5 H" NT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to z I% D3 d- t6 L" H
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten / T* b, y" o+ Y+ c- t8 D
Island and to the same house where the pastor
% J* l; Q2 Y4 x, |2 z2 {4 T/ e4 Ohad taken the woman three days earlier. % M0 w2 Q- T. h# h- ]
He helped the man climb the three flights of
' u# y2 @2 z6 {+ E. Y6 n" l! Dstairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
, V; w: W- A6 |: \the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
" p) ^( v; [8 S: ~2 m. ^reunion he could ever imagine.4 Z9 o0 u7 U/ M6 H% n: _
