 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned $ L; [3 u6 Y+ X% z4 G. s; i' U" _
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
1 [5 l7 Y' g- p/ Z* W" ^9 Rin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
1 c6 j! a6 T6 j8 f: @) Oexcited about their opportunities. When they saw + l9 b$ }* E8 H
their church, it was very run down and needed
7 s! }4 \+ W& \0 Y/ Y/ kmuch work. They set a goal to have everything
/ _% _0 n! K Mdone in time to have their first service
" M: C4 z' C9 X7 h+ g6 H4 Mon Christmas Eve.
) a# M) [9 L6 L8 u- ~9 K: VT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
( @' f: d5 {6 X* Z* r4 T, z5 xpainting, etc, and on December 18
B6 h3 k' Y$ Cwere ahead of schedule and just about finished. 3 L6 o( j3 h3 P
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
3 A2 d5 S9 Z- s D% c5 S( brainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
V3 m; K# M) t O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
& C D) D0 c( y& GHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had9 j3 |* K+ \" E! k
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about ) z8 Q9 U2 ]3 q: v* n) r; u: J [
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall . \# N4 b" R: ?0 s! o7 c
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
. y3 s$ R& G3 Rbeginning about head high.
0 J& z9 j* B* T: b2 @/ ZT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, % s: {7 ~! v0 k/ f! x9 m+ v
and not knowing what else to do but postpone 0 E! n' u: F- b% N5 U
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. 4 k. w: y( N0 |% {" c9 z
On the way he noticed that a local business was ' [$ S' X7 ]( M" K. Z) q+ q
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he 7 _2 x9 N' |" N& F! @% s, c
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
) J }1 _- z) c$ O& q h" t6 Xhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
& d6 {; y- ~- P$ h, ^# |6 x. s2 w8 Uwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
: l+ R1 [( V, A0 k Jembroidered right in the center. It was just 0 S7 h& t: b& N, |
2 u/ A6 L/ C& E2 a' K9 L& [+ p& H0 o. K: [! `& S
5 e# b. n! C( z; S6 P& V* f/ h% X) o$ A# d; ]
2 C* T% b1 A, E* \( S& Y* [8 M4 Z! H. n; i
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. ) f" V }; {# C% O! a- R* D2 g
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
* U: b8 f- O, T5 _6 I, X0 wwoman running from the opposite direction was + e3 S0 ~3 O: j8 c3 S+ Y3 J; V
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
" y! G7 m' r, ~' Z# v, iinvited her to wait in the warm church for
% \( H; x$ L! Z3 B% fthe next bus 45 minutes later. ) }7 v8 H! A8 |4 l6 u9 Q/ Z
) _: `) u" a+ m
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
) X4 d: r- b8 {# N m% F- iwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put : ~) a8 [& Z& c! v. Q
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
9 V/ H2 C" O" k- g3 \6 Ycould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. $ w; `/ _% a* I- _
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
- b7 W ~) d, K6 a6 U7 D7 n5 j3 Maisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"( O; M# W# V# N$ H$ I7 _6 z
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
. A6 g; v1 ?9 DThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
5 B: G! {& ]5 q# nthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
5 g$ s9 l4 @6 T& Ait there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
+ ~) b2 n0 E# wmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . 5 n! W* ?. Z" {2 J( L9 a
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
) }8 s% q* v: P3 R" B. Atold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
) n3 q e1 z5 k, |) D5 ]! zwoman explained that before the war she and
' ^: H! S2 \7 n' h" N6 y- `9 x1 r) vher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
4 g. n; ]7 o: c* y6 l: T( \: D3 n" ^ x* ~' Z1 t! d5 W. o
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. , ` a$ n7 V6 C5 J- b Z' p
Her husband was going to follow her the next week.
5 ~; y, b# R( \0 q; m) _He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her M1 H" Z+ T1 p! \. _0 U+ [1 X0 F
husband or her home again. " y- l+ n- z1 z6 H9 n% I/ l* U) ^8 U
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;1 `. J, B7 f3 z! } ~! D% ?; T
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.7 V: X- N4 ~$ H( B( C/ K n1 t
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That6 \( U. D- u- J: Z$ D& Y, ~
was the least he could do. She lived on the other+ O& s, o+ L2 F3 `$ u
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
, o8 E i1 \2 f6 _ Gfor the day for a housecleaning job.
" K z! a0 \; Q/ v8 T& p2 VW hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
- P8 X9 ?& k5 s2 rEve. The church was almost full. The music and the * I$ S% B" P9 \$ H9 k9 J. p
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the ! h! @. B2 h* ]+ g
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 3 Y% ^' u# ^) _$ e. l# i2 @0 f8 Y! ~
and many said that they would return.. 0 V- ]" E3 `4 D
One older man, whom the pastor recognized
( i/ p; m, q: E) ] f: ]6 _1 Tfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
7 E3 l/ i. I0 v0 }pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he * e }' X: b8 y' h3 A# ]% @
wasn't leaving.
7 s6 K3 y8 q7 Q, T! R& e0 mThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 9 u- N8 c1 n/ k+ s) l1 ~# u+ u
the front wall because it was identical to one
" ^/ s; E* J3 B E( [that his wife had made years ago when
( [: L; b# E4 d: Kthey lived in Austria before the war and how , x+ x8 A7 P& E; F& I" C# [
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? / p6 i& `+ X0 H. N! |4 R6 l
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he ( v5 c4 m9 Z1 J G4 Y, K1 [% L y
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
3 O3 w) `( X5 G( h% L& s1 c. ysupposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
8 E, S! ?3 e3 [; }8 ?6 A5 Z! Jput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home& o) h% v4 J# A7 z: ?- W
again all the 35 years between. " v- O; Z7 N0 i! K# `: C# R
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
5 @8 R* P3 D8 W. B8 Z; ?# w- ktake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten ' Z) _/ L: \: Q3 Y
Island and to the same house where the pastor " t7 @4 W+ ~5 K) m6 H: |* W7 J4 |* F
had taken the woman three days earlier. 3 @" _: y" ~9 R0 @
He helped the man climb the three flights of
( G: m$ c( E" G! o# K; n) ystairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on, Y/ d/ J) h2 d- Y) H; v+ G
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
( d5 U, R0 ?: p1 k+ _reunion he could ever imagine.

difficult at best, just remember I'm here % q- g& Z' I3 q3 u+ v, [0 N( l
praying and God will do the rest. Pass this on
