9 W, R# g7 o' T# g/ C/ s- yEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning., O/ t, ^7 H( ?3 W: V
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.4 J; N# ]" u8 d
The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected./ o; A3 E$ H7 U( ~/ m$ w
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.% O, w. v# q+ Q/ K8 B3 m! K
"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. 3 o, \2 |' H# A5 ?5 w' n* {
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
5 G( ]4 x% C; RThis year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
