Edmonton's population grows by 30,000

* J2 t6 e( {- Y4 u W" L- ^EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.+ \, c$ U |7 F
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.6 `7 c3 z: n1 ]" f5 L" G
The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.

) I6 ~! }5 ~- a0 A M4 _& G: M" b"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
, }, _2 l9 T9 R9 xEdmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.7 a/ u% E* Q7 [2 s7 |. B6 H0 O$ l
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
