There are no changes in the way Albertans register for publicly-funded health care. However, as announced in the 2008 budget, health premiums have been eliminated as of January 1, 2009.

1 B0 G( B+ l6 t. M8 yPayment and collection of health care premiums owed prior to January 1, 2009 will continue under these guidelines:

, O8 r) P! A7 A0 \) A 1. All Albertans are responsible to pay premiums unless they qualify for premium assistance, government-sponsored income support programs, or are senior citizens.8 D9 E# G" Z2 C. y4 J
2. Employers and benefit administrators who register and pay premiums on behalf of their employees will continue to do so.5 M/ q8 J; u' E3 f! |& H! {
3. Alberta Health and Wellness will continue to pursue collections from those who fail to pay premiums.
2 n: m* Q' ?% ^3 A5 O0 R/ R! K 4. Contributors to Alberta Blue Cross or other supplementary insurance plans that provide prescription drug, dental, and other extended coverage, will still pay those premiums, as they have not been eliminated.
