The VERTO Project
The YOUCAN VERTO Project is a Government of Canada funded project that will
bring 12 (per intake) at-risk youth together into a unique 20 week group-based
& B1 S4 o, D4 a: n2 Yemployability skills program entitled “The VERTO Project”; 16 weeks of day
% k) ~2 e8 A6 |/ e2 k% Uprogram and 4 weeks of employment exposure. YOUCAN is an acronym that
stands for Youth Organizing to Understand Conflict and Advocate Non-Violence.
1 H; O+ V( A( e1 h9 sYOUCAN has served youth in the Edmonton area for almost six years and our
6 ~9 w2 S) B" j! l. emission is to equip youth to engage and inspire others to peacefully resolve
7 d/ w% [- `) K% Aconflicts and develop healthy relationships in their communities. The goal of the
VERTO Program is to assist participants in obtaining and maintaining the skills
+ D" d" F5 U+ J# x0 snecessary to bring success into their lives. The program is designed to serve
, r& _# o7 M- byouth who have been involved in the justice system. The program will expose
participants to a wide range of components focusing on: employment
7 R& t: h+ P- f: A( s& S* [! Mdevelopment, personal wellness, technology learning, conflict resolution and
' l( n+ [: y% J7 ^: vexposure courses. Additionally, we will incorporate topics around health and
wellness, volunteerism and leadership courses. The youth will be provided with a
! H# Z4 _) m  d' m) B4 l6-month employment follow-up once the program is completed.
The project will run from 9:30-4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Central
YOUCAN office, located at 8718-112 Avenue in Edmonton, Alberta.
The following position is a one-year contract with the possibility of
# q: y: E4 O' Y& ~" p- J: f0 fextension dependant of funding and performance. Resumes will be

Employment Developer: 1 Full-Time Position (40hrs/week)
( I; ?$ B9 b) d; d• Responsible for building relationships with employers within the
community to partner with YOUCAN to ensure there are employers that are
' \: J. _' r+ }willing to expose youth to the current employment opportunities
( o: X" T+ Z. h• Ensure the youth action plans are reflecting the employment goals as
being realistic to each youth participant
) F  U( v- N, A' G, B• Work with the youth to find the appropriate training needed to equip the
youth with the necessary skills needed to find the employment suitable to
each participant
; K( N( [0 u& ?* X) w$ Z: u• Assist youth with employment development including the development of
/ X/ P; F7 _' @; I( {  ]" I# Wcover letters and resumes etc.
% K. M- l" l/ t• Coordinate the employment exposure component and on site work
experience of the project, and monitor the progress of each youth at the
placements
• Conduct the 6 month follow up process for each of the youth, evaluating
5 j$ o' b7 ?# v( d1 T; t& Nthe process, and supporting the youth where needed
• Work closely with staff of the Verto Project to ensure the holistic approach
is being fulfilled for each youth

 Post-secondary education or 3 years related experience accepted
 A minimum of three years relevant experience is required.
 Enthusiastic and energetic innovator who is process-oriented and committed

 Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.
- a& c. w* [5 f6 v7 ^ Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, organizational and

 Strong connections with industry, or the ability to make those connections
quickly
 Strong skills in building relationships with industry and youth
! g! Z. P) i3 z3 A, P Experience working with youth at risk, and able to assess the needs of youth
; u* @6 ]0 ?8 X, w; `* k4 Q) dat risk as it pertains to employment
# ?: I  F$ Y+ H8 b2 E Skilled in software applications, computers and other office equipment
 Strong leadership and active listening skills
 Ability to motivate youth
