The VERTO Project

1 q+ J# J; K) Nbring 12 (per intake) at-risk youth together into a unique 20 week group-based
$ U" }$ f# V: E5 P0 pemployability skills program entitled “The VERTO Project”; 16 weeks of day
- ^! ^$ ~4 R# r/ I' j: R& H4 xprogram and 4 weeks of employment exposure. YOUCAN is an acronym that
: Z: f3 G0 x: ^) A) u; k% {stands for Youth Organizing to Understand Conflict and Advocate Non-Violence.
' k; p/ u0 J- A+ n2 t' O5 PYOUCAN has served youth in the Edmonton area for almost six years and our: M! n8 C" A0 |5 I R
mission is to equip youth to engage and inspire others to peacefully resolve
# r1 I) s0 r- ~7 y; H0 K3 w( Uconflicts and develop healthy relationships in their communities. The goal of the
" H5 x# Y8 c9 T; f, |% KVERTO Program is to assist participants in obtaining and maintaining the skills
4 v% _( c% [( R3 ]8 Knecessary to bring success into their lives. The program is designed to serve
2 S8 t/ i7 T7 u2 b7 ~youth who have been involved in the justice system. The program will expose
* v7 A3 s w- Dparticipants to a wide range of components focusing on: employment) W$ g2 L! Y" a- i0 Q, h
development, personal wellness, technology learning, conflict resolution and
( X8 L& Z5 f. m9 Zexposure courses. Additionally, we will incorporate topics around health and3 d) ]& Z) I$ l7 n
wellness, volunteerism and leadership courses. The youth will be provided with a( K$ g8 h" O3 f) L2 w2 j
6-month employment follow-up once the program is completed.. U8 N$ P$ d# U9 n9 T1 s
The project will run from 9:30-4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Central
5 t5 f5 r8 @ i" q `YOUCAN office, located at 8718-112 Avenue in Edmonton, Alberta.& e: x7 k! B. C7 _
The following position is a one-year contract with the possibility of1 k3 m. e* L8 L! L7 ]0 T

) `2 z6 K+ |$ h9 r1 t• Responsible for building relationships with employers within the
F8 U6 d1 j& Wcommunity to partner with YOUCAN to ensure there are employers that are
/ J+ ]8 g5 M |2 Q1 F6 vwilling to expose youth to the current employment opportunities9 B% G3 \. b+ D0 n* S1 Q
• Ensure the youth action plans are reflecting the employment goals as
* X7 ]5 ?/ f1 z8 fbeing realistic to each youth participant
2 @6 H* R/ t4 f. H- I• Work with the youth to find the appropriate training needed to equip the; w: z- N* {0 Z; G: t
youth with the necessary skills needed to find the employment suitable to5 |- q$ u1 q+ [8 u
each participant2 d+ Z, F2 B7 X9 h
• Assist youth with employment development including the development of
+ _( I/ A$ {" ~7 n$ p* Pcover letters and resumes etc. R) D9 I1 d1 e/ Q, ~0 @. v
• Coordinate the employment exposure component and on site work; ?# u' K% ?( m9 M/ d( v0 d, c
experience of the project, and monitor the progress of each youth at the
0 Q$ n3 c2 `# v% x K9 H+ Xplacements/ y* T) c s3 ?9 e
• Conduct the 6 month follow up process for each of the youth, evaluating
, M/ L' c3 D# k8 z9 R) y0 |4 l6 Hthe process, and supporting the youth where needed& O: \4 y! v; H( R% |2 E
• Work closely with staff of the Verto Project to ensure the holistic approach8 ]( F8 T$ |9 c& ]* j# ?+ J8 g
is being fulfilled for each youth$ o" d9 M7 }$ S& k( R( |9 s* [
• Administrative tasks, such as phone, fax, filing, copying, etc. that are
+ w4 ]7 R! D( J3 }. t& d, krelated to YOUCAN’s Verto Project* Y: [& i: Q1 p6 F2 W0 {$ ~ R
• Other tasks as they arise within the position
+ R3 Q5 I/ [( h4 t; OExperience Required: Employment Developer& Z3 Y: W# W5 }. ~/ W
 Post-secondary education or 3 years related experience accepted
; ^5 x, m; w) n5 o/ x1 p A minimum of three years relevant experience is required.8 K2 b# ^1 b7 n3 G: N+ ^& S
