CALGARY — Screams filled the air after a 17-year-old teen was killed after being struck in the head with a pickaxe at a house party.

; r% U% q2 k! @7 H0 P6 u8 z+ PNeighbours said about 100 teens were at a house in southeast Calgary when the attack happened in a detached garage about 11:50 p.m. Saturday. 8 i4 l2 ]( k: f7 _- U* l

Lisa Poole, who lives two doors down from where the teen died, rushed outside when she heard a lot of screaming. ; _% b; D+ a ^/ I3 }0 D, O: E

I saw one boy laying there with a pickaxe stuck through the front of his head and some blood on the ground ... I haven’t slept at all and I can’t get that picture out of my head.” 8 T1 d, M a( e& n. ]6 C

“I was standing out back having a cigarette then I heard a kid screaming, ‘They killed him,’ then they all scattered,” said Jeff, who didn’t want to give his last name. * V! H, D/ G9 E0 [

Jeff said two high school-aged girls live at the house with their mother. He said large parties are common at the residence. 4 O5 v& J- v, j) S0 E2 G7 D

Friends identified the dead teen as Matt McKay, 17.

2 \9 p: Y# {, ~0 ]Chris Briggs, who grew up in the same neighbourhood and was friends with McKay, described him as nice guy and avid athlete. ( M% p) u3 B3 m; n

“He was a pretty good guy,” he said. “He played hockey with my friends, he was huge into hockey.”
