Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties - D9 ~ U3 a! n5 m4 h
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad

( K l+ Q0 ]2 B) k6 J' U3 `* n$ k' IFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current " J/ D: [0 r% h9 f
undergraduate international students from the increase to the 4 S; \/ P. W% Q/ s' }' i
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
! M- g. s$ x {4 w% Astudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
3 V* [$ V r: Utuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
! E! O* O$ x5 ^& i/ T" BAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
7 q( o; {0 B+ \2 S; gthe differential for international graduate students.
8 G7 o% n+ ~9 t) R3 F3 S) U& V1 O/ z: E1 v/ o% g# k% ]$ k
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an " n9 i8 B! \9 U% T8 L/ R: H2 x
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
, s9 m" I* F; j' ^220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
1 X/ @6 |$ L' Jwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
# }' d" C- ?% X2 S1 {: s; B0 eleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 4 C2 A4 P" v" L
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected / ^' l" V6 _% `1 h
increases once they are here.: ~- k# z. {! C# Y3 M) u; G3 A) i* j

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the + s# E3 ? Z5 L3 L: } c
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
' _2 z- I% M6 gwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
$ }2 {+ k% L3 l& R" \have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 4 E4 \" F4 u8 N" E
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
