Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. : e1 E1 X0 J1 ~" @3 _

7 L( s. x3 O1 `. Z# fYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties ' _8 f) ]- E5 p' ]
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad ! S# R& o8 l0 @/ y( Q
news to report from that meeting.

6 k. d' G7 k$ B/ Y% Q0 ~$ t8 I2 zFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
# C h, [$ B0 G4 u3 H: n g, ?undergraduate international students from the increase to the 0 G. q0 x8 Y+ F& x* Z8 l K! U
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
( \& {! I, F h) o x1 }0 Rstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
7 H9 R3 z [- ~; f1 C6 Mtuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). * x- T- X% }- G2 {
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
, ~5 d$ I. W' d( v" `the differential for international graduate students.% L4 _( O" F' \; b. E4 _; Z
6 n8 V& O* j4 N% h( I: R! KNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an 6 C" i9 r( \- a9 t+ i
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to + K9 k: d1 `$ i5 S' q- O# X
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 5 ^7 I6 ^; G, \4 S, H; M6 ?( M( u, o+ q
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
2 I$ H5 y1 r% V+ `# K# Q0 `least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
+ q1 n; V2 Q/ F( V' r6 i& `tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
U3 L: u" m$ U* m7 @% x4 \increases once they are here.' K& c. k2 M. k% Q
$ [4 p# Z4 H6 z* v9 _2 ` vThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
1 M& U: c, |5 P5 ^9 r9 kinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
# g5 o) r. _7 P( O8 J* pwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that 3 y) i& v# r. R, {) L8 j
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
3 ~# U0 i. w1 |% H/ j4 c& Zincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your Z+ n/ `& `2 b+ a
help. Thank you.
