C& L7 }( M# N! W) M+ r2 |+ H" d2 TGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
+ ~3 n( T$ [. L: d O6 N* o* ?Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 1 R$ v8 o$ @ Y: _( v
news to report from that meeting.7 B- K1 L7 t( C/ Q
0 X( B4 n! j6 o6 i3 T3 QFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
) h+ U3 k1 J1 ?8 l, q5 W1 D* qundergraduate international students from the increase to the
) d: b# D3 w+ C# s3 M4 |6 B9 g* Ddifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international " u" a2 d6 Y5 I6 R
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base " T- e0 j- j$ {4 E, a5 u- ]+ e
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
9 y( I2 j; w* m2 JAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 3 H) [$ J" f, U7 q0 A+ e
the differential for international graduate students.
( w9 f. e! x1 i2 |8 s! R) a9 y/ h4 v
( S$ V$ ?4 k6 y, |5 i. P( q, I' s* KNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an + m2 K* Y6 `" a/ u" x" B8 J2 H
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to ) I; m8 R& V" j" |; a! s0 _
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students ' i; C, x! {7 Q% T9 J' B7 `
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
+ T8 |4 ]% _8 N/ ?* Rleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in k8 f) D; `; J9 B: \
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
, {5 K) m0 U- g, Q8 l# V5 k" Uincreases once they are here.; D0 K( u" t9 ^: h

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the % L9 _$ r2 X$ ]' h; x
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
' T4 H9 r$ e4 Y6 W1 }+ Qwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that ! `3 K7 S9 l2 {; |% d: z
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 9 K: H! f0 i0 R; k
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
