Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,

- E$ i3 o, [8 c% \7 x& V7 w3 E4 ?Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
3 b% x- i7 C% o9 m  P: ?- fCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
news to report from that meeting.
) _  C" m: d3 N2 j: R
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
9 b% Q9 n* C- y% T, k6 l1 `, Yundergraduate international students from the increase to the
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
( l7 f( }) l, l" rstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
6 Z6 Q$ ]% e  _. EAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
the differential for international graduate students.

! |3 ]# q* o, B# j( w" t$ vNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
% _, _! K5 X9 Zwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
  t5 K- ]6 x. B  ktuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
. j& z& `4 @7 P* k; fincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
* z8 K0 X! \" L% ]6 b1 Owould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
: Z$ r- @: |9 R" j3 R3 ]increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
8 q8 g' B5 h9 ^. Z- F) c& O  Yhelp. Thank you.
