9 L' x" P8 G* L, A" WGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

, e& c, f8 G% |) eYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
news to report from that meeting.

( t0 h! w5 g( H9 RFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
+ G: d4 V& x* C5 mdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
+ j7 ~: y( u6 N: V7 {& [2 A- k- {students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
, r  R: @# C! t$ v' r3 w7 E% ?tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
( M+ s3 m8 r$ L7 f1 }Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
. V6 m5 j  d! S" Z- v5 B4 W$ Sthe differential for international graduate students.
& a) H9 q7 _% X" b
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
# n( O$ l9 M# g6 dwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
% q( R) O7 ^! M! p% W# i% Dleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
) Y# }: I* h0 \- Eincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
$ P, I! ~. S6 ^. ~. r- e6 r0 lwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
% n% C& g& m) H9 Vhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
help. Thank you.
