Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 1 J/ b5 `/ f# a; m: x" v+ C' U% C3 X2 u
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad - }8 B- O! S0 u
news to report from that meeting.
6 i! U4 W9 m# R1 U8 j" j7 a7 I. q5 ~# z' x! U
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current / {8 L( W, ]1 v' v
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
% Y* Z) s. E# }% H ydifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
+ Q6 j% \% X2 pstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base ' M9 A$ S& ^' ~! U- ~
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
4 r% m% Q1 `" xAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase ! r3 @1 {& @, N4 w" K4 c
the differential for international graduate students.' q/ [- [# @( {1 `0 q- }; p
# L6 l; h* Q9 t* g- z6 H0 @Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
4 C! B6 Q) ^# E# B$ U6 `4 I/ uincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
; A6 E ]7 P0 N220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students ' b/ f$ R2 {; L, H R2 E: F
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 1 ^/ Y- `. ? W) M* }& p+ F- r
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
; f: n1 Y% l, ^# q1 F$ utuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
7 |$ g, e d1 X2 {' m6 N! lincreases once they are here.$ l8 N, R& E# I( e" _
8 q7 e3 `: Z1 w5 BThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
5 X4 L( A, v- F4 ~3 O$ H: p0 @8 winternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I + T% T% {+ R" S( B( A- b2 [0 o: l
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that n: P" L. V, ^, A0 X6 k
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 6 o9 V' u( W' ~' R4 L
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
