Hi, there

Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
news to report from that meeting.

$ I: \1 y7 d3 [9 l; ^, R( V# LFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
# [+ B, v! D8 b8 `! t7 {undergraduate international students from the increase to the
$ w8 L7 T& C0 t! T% Tdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
8 t+ @5 |9 G3 O# {. Atuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
the differential for international graduate students.
5 m3 j; Q9 O* [$ _& Z- ^, H# h
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
! l% H) L, Y$ }7 r0 l" y' n1 o; R1 Oincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
increases once they are here.

; O! w" y' F% o1 Q6 [' x+ MThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
. }7 f$ v, J: B" F. i3 bhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
+ y: A3 Q, k5 v2 L7 S& ~* z" iincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
