When arrived to Edmonton to start my graduate studies on 2004, me and

increases the tuition fee by few percent every year and international % o2 F% Z) S2 l+ A& p- s
differential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this,
8 I o& j- a. Pthe fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers 0 N0 V6 J2 ]; v
and most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were
5 g5 k1 B: m3 g7 T3 yasked to look for a residence on open market.( \) T% |* E, u" y- Q l+ x4 [
, L* e( a- d8 J4 NWhile the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has
; D% n$ F1 l: d0 B# l/ ?5 eincreased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid
: f' B9 F" Z' \) Z g" u7 B, ^4 ?exactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our
% E/ E" A& C$ r; x( [& z9 S# kadmission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students
" n, K0 {+ y" X, s! _2 C=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after + E8 P5 W. O- U: m- O
tuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just $ E/ ?' p8 s \. B0 ~
imagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am
: ^/ e* V. m- d0 ggetting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of + ? C4 P$ D& u" |3 u& O
us) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was

Also have in mind that Alberta is a rich province and University of - W% e( |9 K9 H8 `8 }
Alberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants # w" X& F( T- ~0 z+ z& w
from different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate
8 m9 l }& F9 X+ S Astudents are the main pillars of research work at the university.

7 y0 Z" ]# ] ?$ f6 o) a( lMy objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention
5 e! J4 V& T( @7 t3 w9 iis to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and
8 e/ r6 K- m) p- J7 Uespecially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take
! Z. z8 T2 G: C9 x7 f" L- h+ _% H' p 9 C- ^" l9 i$ D
initiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for
" k" C, i1 D& y1 Fgraduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs? i& `' S) G: E) K5 E6 Z
